Lyle Orstad

September 26, 1928 - April 20, 2018

Visitation: Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-8 p.m., family present from 6-8 p.m., at Anderson Funeral Home.

Service: Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 26 at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton.

      Lyle Orstad, age 89, died Friday, April 20, 2018 at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center.  Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 26 at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-8 p.m., family present from 6-8 p.m., at Anderson Funeral Home.

      Lyle was born on September 26, 1928 in Canton, SD to Ingvald and Ella (Walquist) Orstad.  He attended country school at Jensvold #13 and graduated from Canton High School in 1946.  Lyle served in the US Army from 1951 – 1953 as a radio operator.  He received a Purple Heart while serving in the Korean War.      He married Vera Fogle on February 4, 1956 in Sioux City, IA.

      Lyle farmed south of Canton until 1973.  He then worked for Town & Country Trailer, the Soil Conservation District, and spent 16 years with the Lincoln County Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator.  He was a skilled equipment operator and built many terraces, stock dams and pits in the local area.

     Lyle enjoyed model airplanes, big band jazz, drawing, painting, crossword puzzles, sudoku, and reading, especially military history and aircraft. Lyle was also a member of the Canton VFW.

     Grateful for having shared Lyle’s life are his children, Robert (Marilyn) Orstad, Denver, CO, Cynthia (Nancy Williams) Orstad, Minneapolis, MN, Kirk Orstad, Canton, SD and Linda Orstad-Brings, Sioux Falls, SD; sister, Wava Enger, Sioux Falls, SD; 9 grandchildren, Roy, Russell, Cassandra, Alison, Paul, Chandi, Jonny, Sarah, & Maiya; and 5 great-grandchildren, Efriam, Phoebe, Kolton, Alex, & Maggie. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera in 2012, his parents, and his sister Doreen Crawford.   In lieu of flowers, donation may be directed towards the Arne Severson Nursing Endowment at the Canton Good Samaritan Society.
