David Myron Roti was born August 10th, 1938 to Myron and Minnie Mae Roti in Fairview, SD.  He grew up in Fairview, SD, attended Washington High School in Sioux Falls, SD. He was an avid speller, qualifying for a speling championship many times.  “That’s a funny.”

David enlisted in the Army in 1955.  He was stationed in Korea, Ft. Carson, CO, Germany, Lincoln, NE, Fort Leavenworth, KS, and Fort Knox, KY.

He married the love of his life Carol Steineke, on June 28th, 1958. The very first time that David meet Carol he told her that he was going to marry her!  David was right, together they had and raised five daughters.

After 20 years in the Army he retired in November 1975, after serving to two tours in Vietnam and obtaining several medals including 2 Bronze stars and an Air Medal.

They then moved to Fairview, SD where they lived in the house that David’s grandfather built in 1916.  They lived there till the time of his death.  He worked as a carpenter, a trade he learned from his father.  David was a master of building things as well as a master of telling others how to fix things.

He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his loved ones. He loved it when all of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren would visit.  He totally enjoyed giving all of us a bad time equally, no one was left out.  He also loved to hunt, fish, play poker, play bean bags, and mow the town of Fairview with his brother, Jim.

He survived by his wife Carol;  5 daughters: Karla (Mitch)Johnson, Brenda (Charles) Larsgaard,  Jill (Larry) Johnson, Jean (Rick) Fossum, and Dawn (Dana) Kranz; 18 grandchildren:  Nicholas (Joyce) Richards, PJ (Beth) Richards,  Alex Richards, David (Abby Henderson) Richards, Mical Johnson, Eric (Dana) Larsgaard, Andy Larsgaard, Kelsey (Steve) Olson, Megan (Cody) Fritz, Sarah (Brennen) Ahlers, Trevor Johnson, Derik (Jessica) Fossum, Abigail (Jared) Stearns, Benjamin (Kristen) Hammer, Brittney (Tigh) Faehnrich, Brianna Hammer, Aiden Kranz,  and Avery Kranz; 18 great-grandchildren: Kaiden Larsgaard; Dyson, Skylar and Ryker Olson; Genevieve and Cecelia Richards; Nolan, Isaac and Chole Richards; Emrick Fritz; Liam, Lincoln and Lucah Ahlers, Micah Stearns; Hank, Charlie and Coy Faehnrich, and baby Fossum due in January 2021; sister-in-law, Donna Roti and brother-in-law, Arlyn Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters; Betty Sawina, Phyllis Donnaud, Jacqueline Wold, Judy Vortherms, and Susie Johnson, and brothers, Donald and James Roti.

This message is for both the families of Jim and David Roti. Donna and Carol and your families, so sorry for your loses. The town of Fairview won’t be the same without them. Anytime you heard the name Roti, one thought of Fairview. They will be missed by many. My parents, Luther (Bill) and Anne always spoke well of them, their parents and families. All of you have a lot to be Thankful of your memories of Jin and David.

I didn’t know about 2 bronze stars in Vietnam, wow, when I was younger he always treated me good, even though I was intimidated by him a little. He knew I was in the US Army and gave me a break I guess.

May you be comforted by the love of your family and friends during this time. I am sorry we didn’t get to make the trip up there this summer, though it was the prudent decision to make. We are praying for your whole family.
