Winifred “Winnie” Van Buskirk

Visitation: Visitation with family present will be Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton.

Service: Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 29 at Canton First Baptist Church.

Winifred “Winnie” Van Buskirk, age 85, died Sunday, July 26, 2015 at the Canton Good Samaritan Society.  Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 29 at Canton First Baptist Church.  Visitation with family present will be Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton.

Winnie was born on July 19, 1930 in Hawarden, IA to Dick and Mildred (Myers) Hulleman.  She graduated from Hawarden High School in 1948.  She married Vernon Van Buskirk on October 14, 1948 in Waverly, IA.  The couple made their home in Hawarden, IA until moving to Canton, SD in 1966.  In addition to raising her children, she worked as a receptionist for Dr. Angelos.    The couple moved to El Paso, TX for a year before returning to Canton.  She has been a resident of the Canton Good Samaritan Center since 2007.

Winnie enjoyed playing King’s Corner, search and finds books, participating in nursing home activities, and will be remembered for her great sense of humor.

Winnie is survived by her sons- Duane (Marissa), Portland, OR and Bruce (Lori), Beresford, SD; daughter, Sandra (David) Thorsby, Canton, SD; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Judy Nelson and Mildred Rasmussen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon in 2011; parents; son, Kenneth; 3 brothers; and 2 sisters.

    I’m so sorry to hear of Winnie’s passing. I knew her all my life & she was always good to me. I loved her wit & her smile & her laugh. She was also very good to my Dad & he thought highly of her. She was one of a kind.
