Vera Orstad

November 16, 1924 - September 24, 2012

Visitation: Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-8 p.m., with family present from 6-8pm, at Anderson Funeral Home.

Service: Funeral services will begin at 2 pm on Thursday, September 27 at Redeemer Free Lutheran Church in Canton, SD.

Vera G. Orstad, age 87, passed away Monday, September 24, 2012 at Good Samaritan Society Canton.  Funeral services will begin at 2 pm on Thursday, September 27 at Redeemer Free Lutheran Church in Canton, SD.  Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-8 p.m., with family present from 6-8pm, at Anderson Funeral Home. 

          Vera was born November 16, 1924 in Mobridge, SD to Archie and Clara (Van Etten) Fogle.  She graduated from East High School in Sioux City, IA.  She married Lyle Orstad in Sioux City, IA on February 4, 1956. 

          During WWII, Vera worked at Alfs Baker in Sioux City, IA sewing uniforms for the troops.  She then worked and volunteered at Good Samaritan Society Canton for over 35 years.  She was a member of Lands Lutheran Church until moving to town in 1980 and joining Redeemer Free Lutheran Church.  She was active in the choir, taught Sunday School, and was a member of Ladies Aid for both parishes.   She was also active in the Canton VFW Auxiliary, Al-Anon, and bible study groups.  She enjoyed singing and collecting music, sewing, embroidery, painting, and gardening. 

          Words cannot express how hard she worked, how much she sacrificed, how passionately she lived, how dearly she loved.

          Grateful for having shared Vera’s life are her husband, Lyle; children, Robert (Marilyn) Orstad, Denver, CO, Cindy (Nancy Williams) Orstad, Minneapolis, MN, Kirk Orstad, Canton, SD and Linda (Jon) Brings, Sioux Falls, SD; sister, Lois Donaldson, Sioux City, IA; 8 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 6 sisters.

    I got to know Vera while I was visiting my aunt (Ada Stroman) at Good Samaritan. It was so cute when she would hold Ada’s hand and say, “my friend.” I will miss Vera.
