Tanner Larson, age 31, died Monday, October 9, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous 6-year battle with cancer.  Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 14, 2023 at Canton United Methodist Church, Canton, SD.  Tanner’s wish was for attendees to dress casually and to wear your Tanner shirt.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Granite Threshermen’s Association.

Tanner was born on January 10, 1992 in Sioux Falls, SD to Glen and Jackie (Layton) Larson.  He grew up in Canton, where he was active in sports in his younger years.  He graduated from Canton High School in 2010, where he enjoyed FFA and shop classes.  He later earned a degree in welding from Southeast Tech.  After working for Van Voorst Concrete for many years, he began working for American Engineering and Testing as a welding inspector.

While out with friends, Tanner was introduced to Marisa Ashmore and they soon became inseparable.  They were married on May 25, 2019 in Canton, SD.  His family was made whole when his son, Casen, was born.  He loved his son dearly and cherished the short time he was blessed to spend with him.

Tanner was a hardworking, honest, all-around good guy.  He loved bailing hay, hunting, fishing, tending to his animals, and spending time on the farm, especially with his family.  He enjoyed West River hunting trips, Oliver tractors, and attending the Granite Threshing Bee.  He will be remembered for his willingness to help others, his ability to negotiate a deal, and his willingness to part with his hard-earned money if it involved his son, his niece, or his nephews.

He is survived by his wife, Marisa and his son, Casen; brother, Tyler (Tawnee) Larson and their children, Emmarie, Sutton, and Layton; parents, Jackie & Glen Larson; in-laws, Natisha (Frank) Widener; aunts, Cheryl (Greg) Twedt, Janine (Harvey) Menholt, Joan (Paul) Aslesen, Jean (John) McWayne, and Eunie Layton; his dogs, Oliver and Willow; along with numerous cousins, extended relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Orval & Lois Larson and Leon & Olive Layton.

I had never met Tanner but where I work, we have prayed for him and his family diligently these last couple weeks and continue to pray for the family. I am truly sorry for your loss. What helps me in times like this is
2 Corinthians 5:8 ~ To be absent of the body is to be present with the Lord.
You will see Tanner again one day, that is the Lords promise.
    Many blessings to you all.

    Jackie & Glen,
My deepest sympathy in the loss of your dear son. From what is written I see he was quite the young man. But knowing he was your son it’s not surprising. As you go through these trying times remember the joys you shared. God will bless you with those beautiful moments until you meet up with Tanner once again.
    🙏🙏🙏

I will always remember Tanner for his work ethic, the smiles he put on other people’s faces, and the occasional joke. He was so proud of his family, son, and even his goats. Tanner even found the time during his fight to check on my dad who was also fighting a similar battle with cancer. Tanner was loved and will be sorely missed by his AET family.

Tanner you are a warrior and you are my hero!!

“Your last breath on earth, is your first breath in heaven.”

Rest easy Tanner, gone BUT NEVER forgotten my friend.

Tanner was a special guy who always looked out for everyone else first.

Marisa, he was so proud of you and Casen, and yes even the goats. He would share pictures of Casen all the time.

Tanner even took time to check on my dad, who was also fighting a similar battle with cancer. He is my hero and a true warrior.

He will be missed by all who knew him, especially by his AET family.

Tanner’s last breath on earth was his first breath as an angel.

I will miss you my friend, REST EASY!!
