Roma Larson

Service: Memorial services were held for Roma on Monday, July 30, 2018 at Grand Valley Lutheran Church in rural Canton, SD.

Roma Ethelind Larson, 96, of Canton passed away peacefully on July 25, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Center in Canton. She was born May 30, 1922, in Chokio, MN, to Oscar and Christine (Brynjulson) Larson.

Memorial services were held for Roma on Monday, July 30, 2018 at Grand Valley Lutheran Church in rural Canton, SD.  Burial took place at Grand Valley Lutheran Cemetery following the memorial service.  At the age of six, the family moved to Canton. Roma graduated High School in 1940. She got her teaching certificate and taught at Rural Grand Valley and Riverside Schools. After the war, she went to California to aid in Home Missions for new church start-ups.

In 1956, she graduated from Augustana College and in 1966 obtained a Masters is Christian Education from Richmond, VA. Her work took her to Fairbault, MN, Denmark, Richmond, VA, Northfield, MN, Denver, CO, and back to Sioux Falls. Roma was Director of Christian Education at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls for 15 years. In 1982, she continued her education graduating from Dakota State Cum Laude. After graduation she enjoyed working at Sioux Valley Hospital for 10 years in their Medical Records Department.

After retiring in 1992, she moved to Lennox to be near her sister, Velma. In 2017, Roma then transitioned to the Canton Good Samaritan Center where she was loved by the residents and staff.

Grateful for having shared Roma’s life are nieces Sandra (Dan) Kearney of Sioux Falls, Joni (Doug) Groskopf of Denver, CO, Nephew Joel (Karon) Johnson of Harvest, AL; great nieces and nephewa Chase, Nick, Krisi, Kelsey, Janae, Todd, Kim, Liz, Jenny, Dani, Brandon; and eleven great-great nieces and nephews and her many special cousins and friends.

Roma was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Velma Johnson, brother, Art Larson, nephews Carlyle & Maynard Johnson, Craig Larson & Tommy Tryhorn.
