Service:   A Celebration of Nick’s Life will take place at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at Heritage Funeral Home, Sioux Falls, SD. 

Nicholas “Nick” Mattern, age 46, died Monday, June 29, 2026 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD.  A Celebration of Nick’s Life will take place at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at Heritage Funeral Home, Sioux Falls, SD.  Visitation, with family present, will be Tuesday, July 7, 2026 from 5-7 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Foster Network (www.thefosternet.org)

Nick was born on February 8, 1980 in Aberdeen, SD to Jerry and Rebecca (Schumaker) Mattern.  He grew up and attended school in Aberdeen, graduating from Aberdeen Roncalli High School in 1998.  He married Michelle Flanigan on July 3, 2004.  Nicholas Jr. and Hayden were born to this union.  Nick married Rebekah Nelson on March 27, 2021 in Sioux Falls, SD.

When Nick was not working in IT, he enjoyed playing poker, watching Game of Thrones, listening to 80’s rock, playing racquetball, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers.  He also cherished time spent with his family, especially his boys.

            Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Rebekah; sons, Nicholas Jr. (fiancée Savannah Marling) and Hayden; parents, Jerry and Rebecca Mattern; sisters, Katie (Matthew) Berheim, Annika Walz, and Alexandra (Conrad) Neyrey;  ex-wife, Michelle Flanigan; in-laws, Wilbert (Jennifer) Nelson; sisters-in-law, Sarah (Ryan) Woods, Eileen (Kirk) Brown, Kristine (Tony) Lynch, and Marla Nelson; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, uncle Tom Mattern, and mother-in-law Connie Nelson.
