Visitation: Visitation will be Sunday from 1-4 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton. Visitation will resume, with family present, from 6-8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Grand Valley Lutheran Church.

Service: Funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 24 at Grand Valley Lutheran Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Mavis Fossum, age 85, passed away unexpectedly Friday, October 21, 2011 at the Avera Heart Hospital.  Funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 24 at Grand Valley Lutheran Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be Sunday from 1-4 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton.  Visitation will resume, with family present, from 6-8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Grand Valley Lutheran Church.
Mavis was born May 18, 1926 in Canton, SD, to Martin and Gertie (Studsdahl) Severson.  She grew up and attended school in Canton and graduated from Canton High School.  Mavis was baptized and confirmed at Canton Lutheran Church.  She worked at John Morrells and was a telephone operator prior to marriage.
Mavis was united in marriage to Kenneth Fossum January 30, 1948 in Fairview, SD.  They made their home on a farm near Canton, where they farmed and raised five sons.  Her husband died September 29, 2003. 
Mavis was an active member of Grand Valley Lutheran Church, serving on the Altar Guild and Christian Education.  She enjoyed crocheting and playing cards, especially Hand and Foot.  She loved all her grandchildren and will be greatly missed by her family.
Those grateful for having shared her life are:  her five sons- Steve (Pat), Lennox, SD, Dave (Dorothy), James (Linda), Jeff (June), and Kent all of Canton; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy McKenney, Beloit, IA; two brothers- Don (Evelyn) Severson, Platte, SD and Paul (Karen) Severson, Canton; and a sister-in-law, Elsie Severson, Canton; and many nieces and nephews.
