Herb J. Herb farmed with brothers, Don & Bob for many years.  He farmed until 2008 when they moved to town and his nephew took over the farm.  During the end of his farming career and up to the age of 90, he was an avid gardener, passing his love of gardening on to his son, grandson and great-grandsons.  Herb was a loving and caring man who was loved by many.  His children & grandchildren thought the world of him.  His memory and love will live on forever in the hearts of his children and grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared his life, are his wife of 70 years, Grace, his children Bryan (Karen) & Deb (Dave) Zelmer; grandchildren,  Jason (Julie) Ulrikson, Jared (Melissa) Ulrikson, Sarah (Nate) Wek, Adam Zelmer, & Ryan Zelmer; sisters-in-law,  Lois Ulrickson and Audrey Peterson;  great-grandsons, Jacoby, Abram, Kaedrick, and  Kohen Ulrikson, Braxan Wek and baby Wek due in July; great step-granddaughter, Kierra (Kaison) Thies and great-great step-grandson, Krew Thies;  numerous nieces & nephews; and his many farmer friends & coffee group guys.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Otto & Jurina; son Scott; brothers, Robert & Donald (Hazel); half-brother Merle Mikelson; and brother-in-law Richard Peterson.

So, so sad to say good- bye to such a wonderful, kind, gracious man. It is no wonder that he and my dad were life long friends. What a good pair those two made! The friendship of Herb & Grace was a priceless jewel in the lives of my parents and us siblings. I grieve for Grace and his family, yet rejoice for Herb and smile when I think of the reunion with their son Scott. Prayers for all the family.

I always looked forward to seeing Herb He was exceptionally kind and good-natured — an entertaining storyteller. Herb and Grace, along with their children, brought so much joy to me while I was growing up. My husband Paul enjoyed talking to Herb, especially about the farm economy.

Dear Grace and family, we were so sad to hear of Herb’s passing. Lynn and I always enjoyed his visits and discussion about gardening and tips of what to do for better produce. He left a legacy of acts of kindness and friendships. He always had a smile and so pleasant to talk with. We missed seeing him out at our farm this past year because of COVID but Lynn sure enjoyed his telephone calls.
We know as you share stories and memories you will find comfort of family and strength in the caring hearts of friends. May God give you strength and peace. Our prayers are with you.

Grace Bryan and Deb I am so sorry to hear of Herb’s passing. He was such a good guy and friend who always said Hi to me. Remember the rides Herb would stop and give me and Scott a ride to Highland Center for school and sometimes even a ride home all the way a half mile. Seems like yesterday. Anyway hope everyone is well and remember he is waiting for all of us . I am sorry but cannot make the funeral because still healing from knee replacement.

    Bryan and family,
I was so sorry to hear of Herb’s passing. He was always so kind to me at the elevator and gave me the best garden goods.
The pressure is now on the family to take over his garden.
God gives us memories to cherish.
