Gaynor L. Johnson, age 75, of Canton, South Dakota passed away peacefully on April 13th, 2026. He left behind a legacy of laughter, creativity and deep appreciation for the place he called home. Gaynor was a man of many passions. He had a lifelong love for music, often filling the air with melodies that brought joy to those around him. His 20- year stint as a DJ on the “Folk Wave” Saturday morning program that was broadcast from KAUR brought many styles of traditional music to listeners in the area. His curiosity and pride in the history of Canton made him a local storyteller, always ready to share a memorable fact or tale that connected the past to the present. He was active in the “Canton Area Historical Society” and helped produced several videos about local history entitled “A Journey Through the Past”.

Known for his quick wit and warm sense of humor, Gaynor had a way of making people smile in any situation. He was a gifted writer, penning many thoughtful and entertaining poems that reflected his unique perspective on life. One of his proudest accomplishments was being cofounder of the Sioux River Folk Festival now in its 46th year. Through this event he brought people together to celebrate music, culture and the beauty of nature that he cherished so deeply.

Gaynor will be remembered for his creativity, his laughter and the genuine way he connected with others. His presence will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel and Harold Johnson. He is survived by his cousin Renae Parent and special friends Marsha Stensland, Bill Peterson and many more.

He graduated from Canton High School in 1969 and was last employed in the Canton School District as a custodian. He organized many events in Canton including fundraising events after the floods of 2014 and 2025. He was a champion of Canton for sure.

A celebration of Gaynor’s life will be held at the Performing Arts Center in Canton from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesday June 10th. Where friends and family will gather to honor his memory and the joy he brought into their lives.  In lieu of Flowers donations can be made to the Sioux River Folk Festival.

I’ve known Gaynor casually for around 50 years (wow time goes fast!), from things like outdoor class get -togethers & hid beloved Sioux River Folk Festival. What a wonderful man, who will be greatly missed. God be with him in all eternity.
