Galyn Oakland

Visitation: Visitation, with family present, will be Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton.

Service: Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 7 at Redeemer Free Lutheran Church, Canton, SD.

          Galyn Oakland, age 78, died Saturday, June 3, 2023 surrounded by his family at Good Samaritan Society Canton.  Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 7 at Redeemer Free Lutheran Church, Canton, SD.  Visitation, with family present, will be Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton.

          Galyn was born on August 16, 1944 in Canton, SD to Roger and Opal (Davis) Oakland.  Galyn grew up and attended school in Canton. He married Nancy Aurit on April 8, 1967 in Canton, SD.  The couple lived and raised their three children in Canton.

          Galyn worked at Otis Radio before farming.  He then worked at Crawford Implement, Bid-Well, and finished his working years at Adams Thermal.  When he was not working, Galyn enjoyed fishing, the annual Oakland fishing tournament, playing cards, especially 6 card pinochle, riding motorcycle, and spoiling his grandchildren.   He will be remembered for his occasional stubbornness, giving everyone a nickname, and his love of sweets, his family, and a cold beer on the porch.

          Galyn is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nancy; his son, Darin (Sara) Oakland; daughters, Shelly (Kirk) Zittlau and Gail (Tony) Herting; grandchildren, Tanner, Tyler, and Jack Zittlau, Austin, Avery, and Ashlyn Herting, and Brayden, Brynn, and Bennett Oakland; brothers, Warren (Karen) Oakland and Lyle (Sandy) Oakland; sister, Marlys Peter; aunt, Mary Betz; brothers-in-law, Jeff (Linda) Aurit and David Aurit; along with numerous extended relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Larry Oakland and Dennis Oakland; brother-in-law, Larry Peter; and sisters-in-law, Phyllis Oakland and Skipper Oakland.
