Fern was born on July 4, 1925, to William and Alma (Biesterfeld) Butcher in Alexandria, MN. At the age of 7, she moved to Canton SD where she graduated from High School. She married Carl Hammer December 27, 1944 and farmed in the Canton area until 1986. After retirement she and Carl enjoyed winters in Arizona and summers in South Dakota. She was a Grand Valley Lutheran Church member since 1943. She generously volunteered her time as a Sunday School teacher, ladies aid member and officer. Fern was a member of the Sons of Norway and bowled several years on a bowling team. Fern was also an active member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Following Carl’s passing January of 2015, Fern lived in the Good Samaritan Society Canton, SD and then moved to the Glenwood Village Care Center in Glenwood, MN. Here she had many people to share her love of music with and continued to share her singing talent.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Carl; daughter Marcia; parents and her siblings. Fern has left many fond memories for her children, Stephen (Barb) of Rogersville TN, Patricia of Glenwood MN, and Charles (Lorie) of Villard MN. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. www.andersonandsonsfh.com

I appreciate all the good times Fern and Carl had with my parents, Donald and Marcella Sandness. Your folks were fun, kind people. Sending you sincere sympathy .
My heartfelt sympathy to you Tammi and your Mom – on the loss of your Grandmother and Mother.. I remember you talking about Grandma Fern – she sounds like a remarkable woman. Beautiful picture of her! God bless her memory. My prayers surround you today and in the days to come.
Sorry for your loss of your mother, grandmother. She was truly a beautiful person.. May God bless you all.
I am sorry to learn of your loss. I have memories of Fern as a kind neighbor who always bought Christmas cards from me when I rode my bike to their farm place (back in the ’60s).

So very sorry for your loss. Prayers and thoughts are with the family.
