Fern Lorraine Hammer
Services will be at 11 am with visitation at 10 am, December 4, 2021, at Grand Valley Lutheran Church near Canton, SD for Fern Lorraine Hammer, 96, who passed away on November 22, 2021, at the Glenwood Village Care Center.
Fern was born on July 4, 1925, to William and Alma (Biesterfeld) Butcher in Alexandria, MN. At the age of 7, she moved to Canton SD where she graduated from High School. She married Carl Hammer December 27, 1944 and farmed in the Canton area until 1986. After retirement she and Carl enjoyed winters in Arizona and summers in South Dakota. She was a Grand Valley Lutheran Church member since 1943. She generously volunteered her time as a Sunday School teacher, ladies aid member and officer. Fern will be remembered for her beautiful singing voice. She shared her singing talent at weddings, funerals, and many special events. Fern was a member of the Sons of Norway and bowled several years on a bowling team. Fern was also an active member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Following Carl’s passing January of 2015, Fern lived in the Good Samaritan Society Canton, SD and then moved to the Glenwood Village Care Center in Glenwood, MN. Here she had many people to share her love of music with and continued to share her singing talent.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Carl; daughter Marcia; parents and her siblings. Fern has left many fond memories for her children, Stephen (Barb) of Rogersville TN, Patricia of Glenwood MN, and Charles (Lorie) of Villard MN. I am sorry to learn of your loss. I have memories of Fern as a kind neighbor who always bought Christmas cards from me when I rode my bike to their farm place (back in the ’60s).
