Edward Hugh Swyers, age 66, of Canton, formerly of Waterloo, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 15, 2026.
Ed was born on December 25, 1959, to Elberta L. Wiseman Swyers and Earl D. Swyers Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents and a nephew.
Ed was united in marriage to Elaine Kuschel on May 27,1989. He is survived by his former wife, Elaine Swyers; his siblings, Earl “Skip” Swyers Jr. (Joni), Elaine Steinbronn (Jerry), and Jamie Clancy (Rod), and his godmother-Louise Starkey; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him deeply.
Ed attended Waterloo Central High School. He built a career as a mechanic, fabricator, and shop foreman, and was known for his remarkable ability to fix or build nearly anything. He took great pride in his work and especially enjoyed welding.
Ed had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and simple pleasures in life. He loved watching bald eagles along the Mississippi River, riding motorcycles, and taking road trips whenever possible. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing pool, and listening to classic rock music. A devoted sports fan, Ed cheered for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Chicago White Sox.
Over the years, Ed and Elaine made homes in Shakopee, New Hampton, and eventually Canton, South Dakota. No matter where life took him, Ed embraced it fully — finding happiness in the open road, good company, and time spent with family and friends. He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his generous nature, and the many memories he created with those who knew and loved him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel, Waterloo, IA. Family and friends are invited to gather afterward for lunch and fellowship. Following lunch, those who wish to join are invited to travel together to one of Ed’s favorite places for a final farewell.
In honor of Ed’s love for bald eagles, the family kindly asks those attending the service to wear something featuring an eagle if possible.
