Donald “Don” Abbas

Visitation: The visitation will be held on Friday, March 11 from 5-7 pm at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, SD.

Service: The memorial service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 12 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD with a visitation starting at 10:00 am. After lunch, the burial service will be at the Worthing Cemetery.

Donald “Don” Abbas, age 84, died of complications from ALS on Friday, March 4, 2022, surrounded by his loving family at Canton Good Samaritan Society. The visitation, with family present, will be held on Friday, March 11 from 5-7 pm at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, SD. The memorial service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 12 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD with a visitation starting at 10:00 am. After lunch, the burial service will be at the Worthing Cemetery.

          Donald Henry Abbas was born on February 6, 1938, in Worthing, SD to Theodore and Verla (Grayson) Abbas. He grew up on a farm near Worthing. After graduating from Worthing High School in 1956, he served his country in the Army National Guard. He married Sarah Engstrom on April 3, 1982, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. The couple made their home on the Abbas homestead near Worthing, where they were blessed with two wonderful children, Matthew and Stephanie.

          Don farmed his entire life. When he wasn’t in the field with his John Deere, he enjoyed spending time with family, telling stories, and helping those in need with his kindness and generosity. He was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls and a past member of the Canton K-12 Foundation and South Lincoln Rural Water Board. He also enjoyed working with others to resolve issues in the local community. He was a man of faith and integrity who will be remembered for being a wonderful husband, father, neighbor, and friend to many.

          Grateful for sharing his life are his wife of almost 40 years, Sarah; son, Matthew; daughter, Stephanie (Kevin Lochner); sister-in-law, Margaret Abbas; in-laws, Edward and Bessie Engstrom; along with numerous extended relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert “Bob” Abbas. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Feeding South Dakota, or The ALS Association.   www.andersonandsonsfh.com

He had a gentle way of expressing his viewpoint but always got his message across. I valued his advice and friendship he will be missed. My deepest sympathy to Sarah and the family.
