Dennis Kessel

October 21, 1945 - April 30, 2023

          Dennis Dean Kessel, age 77, died Sunday, April 30, 2023 at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center.  Memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 12, 2023 at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, SD.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Love, Inc., or the charity of your choice.

          Dennis was born on October 21, 1945 in Sioux Falls, SD to Emil and Bertha (Stroman) Kessel.  He attended Augustana Academy and Houston Barber School. He was stationed in Germany while serving his country in the US Army.   Through the years, he worked for his uncle Verl at the Train Motel in Sioux Falls, as a barber in Houston, in St. Paul, MN, at the Redfield Hospital, Sioux Steel, McCord Heat Transfer, and at the lamb plant in Hawarden, IA.    Dennis enjoyed old time country music, reading history, art, politics, and visiting with people.  He also loved living in Canton.

          Dennis is survived by his brothers Sam (Peg) Smith and Doug (Judy) Kessel; sister Ava (Spencer) Schipper; aunt Lenora Thomson; brother-in-law, Dennis Krell; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Lana Kessel and Diane Krell.

    A name I have not heard in many years. Worked an overnight shift with Dennis at McCords back in “88-“89. We had many lunch break conversations together. RIP Dennis.
