Darlene was born to Arthur A. Miller and A. Josephine (Toft) Miller on September 13, 1934 at their home in Sioux County, IA.  She joined an older sister, Madonna.  She was baptized in the doorway of her bedridden grandfather Toft’s home.  When she was three years old, they moved to a farm west of Hudson.  A brother Arvid joined the family.  She attended Sunday School and was confirmed at Hudson Lutheran.  She also went to Lutheran League, attending two national youth conventions which built her strong faith in God.

She attended Blanchard Country School and graduated from Hudson High School in 1952.  After graduation, she attended Augustana College for one semester.  She worked for Midwest Beach in Sioux Falls for one year.  She was united in marriage to Leo Kermit Jervik at Hudson Lutheran on April 10, 1954.  They moved to a farm southwest of Canton, SD where they raised their six children: Gregory, Brenda, Kirk, Clark (deceased), Lane and Kevin.  During their school years, she helped with chores and field work.  They joined Lands Lutheran Church where she was active in Bell Choir, WELCA, and bible studies.

In 1982 she started working outside the home in factories and healthcare.  In 1990, they moved to her childhood home and joined Hudson Lutheran where she was active in WELCA.  She was able to go to four National Conventions of WELCA.  She also made hundreds of quilt tops for Lutheran Relief.  Her hobbies were gardening, sewing, quilting, reading, baking, and making and decorating cakes for all occasions.  In addition, she belonged to various clubs.  Her greatest enjoyment was to go to her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s activities.

In 2009 Leo passed away.  She stayed on the farm until 2016, when she moved to an apartment in Canton.  She was able to take some bus tours where she met some lasting friends.

Proceeding her in death was her husband, Leo; son, Clark; parents, Arthur and Josephine Miller; sister, Madonna; son-in-law, Wade; in-laws, Magnus and Martha Jervik; and sisters-in-law, Audrey Knutson and Joyce Anderberg.

Survivors are her children, Gregory, Brenda Johnson, Kirk, Lane (Julie), and Kevin; brother Arvid (Francine) Miller; brother-in-law, Milo Knutson; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

My husband and I are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of your beloved Darlene. We are cousins of Arvid’s wife, Francine, and have often enjoyed Arvid’s stories of growing up on the farm with his family.
We know that she had the same big heart as Arvid, and the same twinkle in their eyes tells me that they had a strong mutual love for one another.
Although we did not get to meet Darlene, we can feel the love that she shared with everyone with whom she came in contact.
We are praying much for the strength of the family, and the comfort of the Lord as He wraps his arms around each of you.
Weeping endureth for a night, but Joy cometh in the morning…
    With all of our love,
    Judie and Lonnell Conley

The memories that you and she shared will be with you forever, and will sustain you during these difficult days.
