Daniel Dean Vander Waerdt, age 73, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 30, 2026 in Sioux Falls, SD.  A visitation, with family present, will take place from 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2026 at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, SD.

Dan was born on July 26, 1952 in Canton, SD to Harry and Gladys (Edman) Vander Waerdt.  He attended school in Canton and graduated from Augustana Academy in 1970.  He furthered his education by studying psychology at Southwest Minnesota State University. While attend SMSU, Dan was involved in a serious automobile accident.  Through pure determination, along with some stubbornness, Dan was able to live a relatively normal life despite the life-long injuries sustained in the accident.

When he wasn’t working security for Behr Heat Transfer in Canton or the mall in Sioux Falls, he enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball, walking and spending time with his dogs.

Dan is survived by his sisters Vickie Griese and Linda Myers; brother-in-law Ron Sehr; sister-in-law Betty Vander Waerdt; along with many nieces, nephews and extended relatives.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Richard and Roy; sisters Julie Rock and Mary Sehr; and dogs Kami, Peppy, and Lady.
