Charolyn “Chari” Hoogendoorn

July 11, 1943 - December 27, 2023

Visitation: Family will greet visitors one hour prior to the service. 

Service: Funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2024 in the Canton Lutheran Church Chapel, Canton, SD.

Charolyn “Chari” Hoogendoorn, age 80, died Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at Centerville Care & Rehab in Centerville, SD.  Funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2024 in the Canton Lutheran Church Chapel, Canton, SD.  Family will greet visitors one hour prior to the service.

Chari was born on July 11, 1943 in Yankton, SD to Normand and Pearl (Sorenson) Hill.  The family lived in Yankton until moving to Canton, SD in 1947.

In addition to raising her 4 fun-loving boys, she spent 35 years working for the US Postal Service.   She started at the bottom and moved up the ranks until her retirement in 1998.

She will be remembered as a strong-willed, hardworking woman who enjoyed staying close to home and helping those in need.  Later in life, she enjoyed her daily coffee with her fellow nursing home residents.

Grateful for sharing her life are her sons, Joe Hoogendoorn, Jeff (Peg) Hoogendoorn, and Darin (Nicole) Hoogendoorn; grandchildren, Brandy, Ahanika, Caleb, Madison, Jaxon, Daniel, Derrick, and Dustin; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Ron (Kathy) Hill and Gerald (Karen) Hill; sisters, Janette Spreckels and Jeanne (Jan) Norton; along with numerous extended relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Gary Hoogendoorn.
