Brian Alden, at the young age of 63, died Sunday, May 21, 2023 with his family by his side at UMMC in Minneapolis, MN. A Celebration of Life Open House will be held on Saturday, June 3rd at their home in Canton. Please join them at: 1001 N. Kidder St., Canton, SD, anytime from noon – 5:00 p.m. In lieu of plants or flowers, please send donations to Harvest Church Sioux Falls, Missions (PO Box 1022 SF, SD 57101) or give to your own church’s missions in memory of Brian.

Brian Lloyd Alden was born on December 11, 1959 in Lanesboro, MN to his beloved parents, Lloyd and Faye (Aug) Alden. He graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1978 where he excelled in football, wrestling and baseball. In 1982, after 4 years filled with studies and the occasional party, he earned a B.S. in Business from DSU in Madison, SD. After graduation, he lived in Texas where he met his wife Lisa Shelton after challenging her to a racquetball game. Even their flashy 80’s style attire did not deter the couple from falling in love. They were married on New Years Eve 1986 in Houston, TX and were blessed with step-son Dustin and daughters Dani and Nikki, none of which inherited the competitive sports gene, much to Brian’s dismay. After years of being the best husband, dad, and business owner/entrepreneur in Houston, TX they moved to Canton, SD where he began work as a salesman with his best friend and college roommate Mitch Johnson at JFI in 2002.

If you were ever looking for Brian, you could usually find him working on his pristine lawn, hanging out in “The Garage” with friends and family or at the Hiawatha Golf Course in Canton with his “Friday Golf Guys”: Mitch Johnson, Steve “Wiener” Peterson, Chuck Larsgaard, and Jim “Dump” Halling. For those of you who knew Brian, you likely couldn’t get through a conversation without hearing about his love of the MN Vikings, MN Twins or tips on how to improve your golf game. He also had a soft spot for his and Lisa’s two dogs, Regis and Raleigh, although you would never hear that from him.

Family was important to Brian and he was there for his girls for every flat tire, empty gas tank, long chat on the phone or move across the country. This generosity and thoughtfulness can be attributed to his faith in God, which we can credit in large part to his mother Faye. He also practiced this faith as a member, board member and volunteer at Harvest Church in Sioux Falls.

Those who were grateful to have shared in his life are his wife of 36 years, Lisa; step-son, Dustin Wills; daughters, Dani (Tyler) Boren and Nikki Alden (Will Seifert); mother, Faye Alden; brother, Brad (Charlene) Alden; sisters, Kim (Roger) Canto and Tam (Jack) Klaehn; along with several nieces and    nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Alden.

Brian was kind and patient with two teenage boys back in Madison, SD circa 1980. He had his baby brother Brad and myself stay with him for a week during the 4th of July.

We hung out at the side pocket playing snooker, watched Wimbledon and of course fireworks.

While the passing of a loved one is sad, may your loved ones cherish the memories you had together as well as find God’s grace fill the void of your absence in their lives.

Thanks for memories and being the cool big brother!

The Dakota State University Trojans were saddened once we heard about Brian. Life is precious, we are hoping the family is doing well. Brian was a quiet person when I knew him.

Lisa, we are so sorry to hear of Brian’s passing. We always enjoyed visiting with him about his Grand Meadow connections and had such a nice visit with him at Terri’s roaring 20’s party. Always had a smile and would chat with us when refereeing volleyball. He was a very nice guy. You have our sympathy.
