Bernice Braaten

March 3, 1927 - March 12, 2017

Service: Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 18 at St Dominic’s Catholic Church in Canton.

Service: Visitation, with family present, will be Friday from 5-8 p.m. at St. Dominic’s. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.

Braaten Paper pic       Bernice Braaten, age 90, passed away Sunday, March 12, 2017 at Hudson Care and Rehab.  Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 18 at St Dominic’s Catholic Church in Canton.  Visitation, with family present, will be Friday from 5-8 p.m. at St. Dominic’s.  A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.

          Bernice was born on March 3, 1927 in Hudson, SD to Ollie and Anna (Goeken) Kaskie.  She married Nels Braaten on August 14, 1948.  He died in 1982.  In addition to raising her family, Bernice ran a café, worked at Visser’s Grocery, Fred Green’s Dry Cleaning, and the school lunch program, sold Avon products, and cleaned the church.  She enjoyed reading, working in her flower garden, and taking care of her grandkids.

          Grateful for sharing her life were her sons, Larry, Alan (Julie) and Bruce, all of Canton, SD; 4 grandchildren, Tim (Kelly Jensen) Braaten, Amy (Steven) Coad, Matthew (Jessica) Braaten, and Rebecca “Becky” Braaten; 6 great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Christopher, Benjamin, and Johnathan Coad, and Connor and Cooper Braaten; along with many extended family members and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Nels; great-grandson, Joseph Coad; 4 brothers; and 1 sister.
