Dr. Benjamin Maynard Noid, Ph.D., d. November 24, 2020 b. April 14, 1928 to Ben H. Noid and Mabel Maynard Noid in Sacramento, Calif. Raised in Sacramento, attended public schools, Sacramento College (A.A.), College of the Pacific (B.A.), University of Utah (M.A., Ph.D). Married Kathleen McGuire in Stockton, Calif. 15 June 1958; four children, Marion, Ben, Chris and Tim.
Ogden Community; Salvation Army Advisory Board, Pres., Red Cross Board; Youth and Families with Promise, Pres; C.O.P.A, vice Pres; Community Action Procedure. Choir Director, First Methodist Church, Japanese Program, Head Start Advisor, workshops in Problem Solving, Parliamentary Christian Church; Ogden Golden Hours Center, Spanish Class and Veterans‘ Group. Ogden Gideon Camp (40+ yrs).
Member of Masonic Groups: Silver Star #4, Canton, S.D., Golden Spike Lodge, Ogden, Ut., Scottish Rite, York Rite, El Kalah Shrine, Klunkers, Eastern Star, White Shrine.
Served in USAF, 11 years active and reserve, honorable discharge as 1st Lt.; Principal, Cherry Valley El, 1955-56, Theatre Director Stockton College, 1956-63; Weber State College/University, 1963-1991, Professor and Chairman (9 yrs) of Departments of Speech & Theatre, Speech, Communication. First Director, Browning Center for the Performing Arts (1964-65).
Active in music and theater for many years singing, acting, directing. Instrumental: violin 5 yrs; tuba in bands; French horn, 1st chair, Salt Lake Symphony, 1954-55. Acted in 30-40 parts including Summer Stock, 1948, Priscilla Beach Theater., Cape Cod, Mass.; tenor soloist for over fifty years, roles in operas; Choir Director; Director of over 50 theatrical productions, California and Utah.
Enjoyed camping and 40+ years of sail boating with family, specially in San Juan Islands and in Canada, the Gulf Islands and Straits of Georgia; children’s music and ice hockey (later families); bow and rifle hunting, backpacking in high Sierra Nevada mtns, flying (Cessna 150 and sailplane), scuba, rock climbing, motorcycle. Canton, always held a special place in Ben’s heart as he visited many times as a child. His grandfather A.G. Noid started and ran Noid’s Drug Store for many years. Noid Drug was operated by his uncle and father Benjamin H. Noid until its closing in 1968. His uncle was mayor of Canton for several years until his death in 1968.
Survived by; children, Marion Noid, Ben Noid (Renee), Chris Noid (Colleen), Tim Noid, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Services September 25th, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Grand Valley Lutheran Church, Canton South Dakota.
I did not know Benjamin, but drank many cherry cokes at Noid Drug as a kid.
And later filled prescriptions there. My family would stop to get ice cream cones
every Sunday.
The Noid family was a long time Canton presence.
