Bill was born on August 19, 1937 in Dubbeldam, Netherlands to Aart and Maria (Noorlander) Den Hoed.  Seeking a better life after the war, Bill came to America at the age of 10.  He lived in New Jersey for a year, bounced around the country, and eventually settled in Iowa.  He became a naturalized US citizen in the mid 1970’s.

Bill often said he found the love of his life on the side of a road.  One day he offered a ride to Gertrude “Gertie” Schelling and the rest is history.  They were married on January 20, 1959 in Sioux Center, IA.  The couple made their home in Sioux Center before moving to Canton, SD in the early 60’s.

Through the years, Bill worked as a bricklayer, dairy farmer, delivered milk for Wells Blue Bunny, and was a machinist for Kooima.  He retired from Kooima after 23 years of service.

Bill was a social butterfly who loved Dutch treats, golfing, eating a good meal, going for coffee, traveling, and spending time with his family.  He also enjoyed wintering in Arizona and watching golf and NASCAR from his favorite chair.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife of 65 years, Gertie; children, Art Den Hoed, Lorena (Rick) Freis, John Den Hoed (Amanda Connolly), Twyla Nielsen, and William Den Hoed; grandchildren, Anna, Leah, Ashli, Joshua, Becky, Eric, Brandon, Chase, Rilynn, Jesse, Curtis, Chris, Kelsie, Taner, and Tyler; 21 great-grandchildren; brothers, John Den Hoed, Aart (Sharon) Den Hoed, Piet (Arlene) Den Hoed, Arie Den Hoed, Len (Trudy) Den Hoed, Abe (Shirley) Den Hoed, and Walter (Lavonne)Den Hoed; sisters, Mina Sly, Maria (Andy) Teunissen, and Trudy (Rich) Carstens; in-laws, Cornie (Esther) Schelling, Albert (Sadie) Schelling, and Harold (Willie) Schelling; along with numerous extended family and friends.  He has preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leo Den Hoed and Adrian Den Hoed; sisters and brothers-in-law, Corrie (John) Schelling and Nanda (Nick) VerSteeg; and sisters-in-law, Angie Den Hoed and Betty Den Hoed.
