Susan Halvorson, age 76, died unexpectedly Friday, September 27, 2024 at Sanford USD Medical Center. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at Grand Valley Lutheran Church, Canton, SD. Family will greet visitors one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association or the Grand Valley Lutheran Church Building Fund.
Susan was born on March 22, 1948 in Canton, SD to Ole and Anna Johneva (Welde) Halvorson. She grew up in Canton, graduating from Canton High School in 1966. During high school, she played drums in the marching band and worked at the dentist office and nursing home. She graduated from the Northern University in 1969 with a degree in Business Education and a minor in Library Science. She also played drums for the Northern University marching band.
Susan spent the majority of her life in the education field, mostly as a librarian. She worked in Adrian, MN, Lennox, SD, Baltic, SD and Redwood Falls, MN. In addition, she worked at Sioux Valley Hospital for several years.
In her spare time, Susan enjoyed reading books, baking, growing flowers and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed her friends in CLOTH(Canton Ladies Over the Hill Club).
Susan will be remembered as a strong, independent woman who drove a Camaro, baked delicious banana bread, and loved her dogs deeply.
Susan is survived by her sister, Nancy (Roy) Waltner; nephews, Keith (Lisa) Hemmingson and Greg (Penny) Hemmingson; great-nephews, Isaac and Jacob Hemmingson; cousin, Karen Van Noort; and faithful dog, Sophie. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister and brother-in-law, Judy (Vernon) Hemmingson.
I was sad when I heard the news that my Canton High School friend,Susan, passed away.
We had so much fun inside and outside of high school. I was lucky to become friends with Susan, Kathie,

Judy was a joyful & witty lady & will be missed. Prayers for her family and friends.
This is sad news as Susan was such a sociable person wherever she was. Our prayers to her family especially her nieces and nephews of whom she was very proud. Susan was at Adrian Public Schools the many years I taught their. Many of us got together often. She will be missed by all who knew her.
So sorry to hear about Susan’s passing. We had a lot of fun when she was in Redwood Falls, MN. Our hearts go out to her family and friends. God Bless each of you.
