Richard “Rich” Scholle, age 74, died Sunday, July 14, 2019 surrounded by his family at his home in Canton, SD. Memorial services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 19 at Canton United Methodist Church. Visitation, with family present, will be Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton.
Rich was born on March 19, 1945 in Stamford, CT to Bernhard and Josephine Scholle. He graduated from Dumont, NJ High School in 1963. He graduated from Southern State Teacher’s College, Springfield, SD in 1967. He began his teaching/coaching career in Burke, SD where he also met his future wife, Joyce Herndon. They were married on July 19, 1968 in Union Baptist Church, Burke, SD. He next taught in Coleridge, NE and Harrisburg, SD. He sold insurance for a time before returning to teaching in Hudson, SD and finished his career at the JDC in Sioux Falls, SD. In addition to teaching, he also owned and operated the Bridgette Drive-In in Canton, SD.
Rich loved animals and took in many strays through the years. He enjoyed cars, antiques, rummage sales, collecting coins, history and talking with people. Rich will be remembered as a jokester who loved fishing with family at the lake cabin, singing his children awake, and spending time with his grandchildren. He also cherished Sunday morning coffee with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Scholle, Canton; daughters: Amy (Bruce) Short, Beresford, SD, Sarah Nelson (Brad Hall), Sioux Falls; Carrie Hoekman (Tom), SD, Katie (Kyle) Lease, Canton, and Angie (Troy) Wog, Canton; brother, Peter Scholle, FL; 18 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; along with a host of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Michele; and aunt, Luise Scholle.
