Phyllis J. Broughton, age 96, died peacefully Friday, November 22, 2024 at her home in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at Canton United Methodist Church. Visitation, with family present, will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, November 26 at Anderson Funeral Home, Canton, SD. Memorials may be directed to Canton United Methodist Church.
Phyllis was born on August 30, 1928 in Artesian, SD to Leo and Mabel (Hall) DeWitt. The family moved to California for a short time before moving back to SD in the 1930’s. She married Adam Jr. on June 17, 1943 in Worthing, SD. The couple made their home in Worthing.
In addition to raising her 8 children, Phyllis babysat and worked at Ottis radio and at the Worthing School. Phyllis enjoyed bingo, walking, reading, coloring, sewing, and watching golf on TV. She was also a long-time member of the Canton United Methodist Church where she was active on several committees.
Phyllis will be remembered for making baby blankets for her grandchildren and for being a strong woman who loved her family deeply.
Phyllis is survived by her sons, Adam (Moni) Broughton III, Les (Shirley) Broughton, Steve (Dena) Broughton, and Eli Broughton; daughters, Dottie Hitzemann and Patty (Kent) Mulder; 20 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren with one more due soon; 21 great-great grandchildren; brother, Todd DeWitt; sister-in-law, Agnes DeWitt; along with numerous extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adam Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Julie (Lon) Wiekeraad; son, Cal Broughton; daughter-in-law, Jonee Rose Broughton; granddaughter, Michele Pesicka; sister, Rose Zahn; and brothers, Bill and Mike DeWitt.
My greatest condolences on the passing of Phyllis. I remember her as a world class lady and outstanding Mother. God, Rest you sole. Will plant a tree in her honor
