Fairview, SD. Maxine Crawford, 86, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Sanford Canton-Inwood Hospital. Her funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Fairview, SD. Visitation will be Friday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, SD, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Maxine was born June 25, 1929 at Louisville, KY to Cosby and Levola (Whitehead) Kelly. She attended school in Louisville and worked at Brown and Williamson for several years.
Maxine married Wendell Peterson April 3, 1954, who she met while Wendell was stationed at Ft. Knox, KY. They farmed south of Fairview from 1954 until Wendell’s death in 1967.
Maxine married Nelmar Crawford December 21, 1971in Fairview. They made their home in Fairview until Nelmar’s death in 2015, when Maxine moved to Sioux Falls to be near her son. She was employed at Canton-Inwood Hospital for over 40 years. Maxine was named employee of the year in 1980. She loved reading her Bible and spending time with Nelmar and her family. She also enjoyed walking and going to McDonalds for coffee.
Maxine is survived by her son, Dan (Dorothy) Peterson, Sioux Falls; daughter, Sue (Richard) Nagelstad, Louisville, KY; step-daughters- Lois (Chuck) Mullinix, Canton,SD, Rochelle (Terry) Helget, Sioux Falls, and Sylvia (Jim) Stillman, Tea, SD; 11 grandchildren- Kilee Peterson, Nate, Peterson, Chris Crawford, Lynn Waite, Cari Andera, Corey Anson, Micah Anson, Nick Anson, Shannon Thompson, Michelle Thompson, and Shane Mullinix; one great-grandson, Trenton Peterson; 17 step-great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters-in-law- Ila Torkleson, Canton and Luella Huckfeldt, Spencer, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, Wendell and Nelmar, and a step-son Craig Crawford.
I have sweet memory’s of Maxine. Now that I think about it, Maxine is the only nurse I remember from my many visits to Canton Hospital. I think that is because she was beautiful inside and out. My heart goes out to the family. Rest in peace Maxine. You will never be forgotten.

I am so sorry to hear about Maxine, I worked with her at Canton-Inwood Hospital from 1976 to 1985. She was so pleasant and always had a nice thing to say and was always smiling. Heaven just got another angel.
She will be missed.

Sue I am so very sorry in the loss of your mother. Losing mom wa one of the hardest things I have suffered in my life. God saw me through it and he will you also. Take comfort in knowing she is with our Savior today. I love you if you need me for anything let me know. I’m here with a shoulder to cry or lean on.

Danny and Sue, I want to say I’m sorry again for your lose. She was a great person and mother and a good friend to our family. Glad I got to visit with you at the home, meant a lot to me.
