Service: Marlys was a lifelong member of Canton Lutheran Church where her service will be held on Friday, May 20th at 2:00 p.m.
Marlys M. Amundson, 84, of Canton died Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. Marlys M. Amundson, 84, of Canton died Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. Marlys Maureen Amundson was born in Canton, SD on November 30, 1926 to Wilhelmina “Minnie” (Oster) Anderson and Selmer Anderson.
After graduating from high school in 1944, Marlys worked as a legal secretary. She was united in marriage to Owen Amundson in 1947 and for many years worked part-time as the bookkeeper for A & R Grocery and full-time as a devoted mother and homemaker.
Throughout her life, Marlys loved nothing more than spending time with family and friends, making sure everyone felt included and had a good time. One of her favorite pastimes was playing Mah Jong with her friends. Marlys had a special gift of hospitality that was treasured by young children who knew her as the candy lady and many others who she generously adopted into the extended Amundson family.
Marlys’ family constantly remained at the center of her life. Her home was a gathering place where countless memories were made including the special memories of her Christmas caramels and cookies and the gifts of her handcrafted Christmas stockings and tree skirts.
Marlys is survived by her children, Janie Slade and David Amundson, both of Canton; two sisters, Sally Knowlton, Sanborn, IA and Sharon (Lloyd) Jongerius, Coloma, WI; granddaughter Kari (Jim) Elling and great-grandchildren Kaleb and Zander all of Canton; special grandchildren Tom and Barbara Henke; along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Owen; their infant son Paul; her grandson Ryan, sisters, Norma “Sis” Doty and Delores Anderson; and brothers, Mel, Elmer, Merle and Terry.
