Marcella Hermsen

Visitation: Visitation, with family present, will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, October 10 at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, SD. 

Service: Funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 11, 2025 at Canton United Methodist Church, Canton, SD. 

Marcella Hermsen, age 91, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at Good Samaritan Society Prairie Creek.  Funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 11, 2025 at Canton United Methodist Church, Canton, SD.  Visitation, with family present, will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, October 10 at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, SD.  Memorials may be directed to LifeScape, Shriners Hospital or St. Jude’s.

Marcella was born on February 27, 1934 to George and Martha (Smith) Vroman.  She graduated from Colome High School in 1952.   She furthered her education by earning an elementary education degree from Springfield College.  She later obtained a Master’s Degree from USD.   She was a long-time 5th grade teacher in Canton, SD where she loved teaching SD History.   She was also a lifetime member of the SDEA.

Marcella married her high school sweetheart on March 1, 1952.  Marcella and Wayne were blessed with five children: Robbin (Arlene), Darcy (Rich) Hull, Darla (Jeff) Thomas, Rory (Jane), and Darcella (Deborah).    Ten grandchildren were an added blessing: Brent (Cindy) Reilly, Chad (Erin) Reilly, Carri (Kyle) Lamfers, Kory Hermsen, Lyndsi Hermsen, John Enke, Chelsie Hermsen, Brooke Hermsen, Chet Hermsen, and Taylor Hermsen.  13 great-grandchildren further expanded the blessings: Rhianna Thomas, Haley Thomas, Caileb Reilly, Remington Reilly, Madison Hermsen, Ace Reilly, Beckett Reilly, Jax Reilly, Tre Reilly, Tripp Lamfers, Torrin Lamfers, Cru Reilly, and Tahoe Lamfers. Great-great-grandson, Beau David, completed the family.

In addition to raising her children, she enjoyed crafts, flowers, watching baseball, decorating her yard with holiday themed blow-ups, especially Halloween and Thanksgiving, following Canton C-Hawk sports, and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s activities.   She served as the official scorekeeper and announcer for Canton Baseball for many years.  She also loved spoiling her English bulldogs.

Marcella is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne; grandson, John Enke; and step-father, Ed Kenaston.

Marcella is survived by her five children and their families, sister, Marsha Risseeuw; many nieces, nephews, former students and many friends.

    Cella and family… your mom took me in as family the first time I met her. I have many of her crafty projects in my holiday decorations. The kids loved when she came to do suckers in the elementary. Sending hugs and prayers from all the Heyduk’s.

    Marcella was a neighbor for about 30 years and I remember her friendly bulldogs. She was a long time member of Praise Circle at the Canton United Methodist Church where Deb was a member. She was smart and friendly and will be missed. Our condolences to you her family.
