A Celebration of Leroy’s Life will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 18, 2023 at Bethany Reformed Church in Canton, SD. A visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, September 17 at Bethany Reformed Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
Leroy Dale Feekes was born in LeMars, Iowa on September 14, 1949, to Theodore J. and Grace (Lems) Feekes. He grew up in rural Iowa with 5 siblings, and attended grade school in Beloit and high school in Canton, SD. He graduated from Canton High School in 1967. On February 24, 1966, while still in school, he went on the first date with the future love of his life, Nancy Joan Servold. A year later, on the same date, they were engaged. In April of the same year, Leroy enlisted in the South Dakota Air National Guard and after completing basic training, he honorably served as a cook for the remainder of his 6-year term. On October 11, 1968, Nancy became Mrs. Leroy Feekes as they were united in matrimony, and the story of their 54-year marriage began. They started to make their home together in a modest rental house in Beloit, which once served as a United States Post Office. Leroy was a baptized member of Bethany Reformed Church, growing to be a faithful follower of the Lord, actively serving in the offices of elder and deacon.
Initially, Leroy was employed at a local dairy farm owned by Burt Lems. In 1971 the couple was able to purchase a home of their own in Canton SD. From 1970 to 1979, Leroy and Nancy continued to grow their family with the addition of three children, while being employed at the Canton Tile Plant and Bid-well Corp. While out driving with his family, it was quite common for Leroy to excitedly point out to his children all the areas he delivered concrete tile pipe to. He then spent many years employed as a trailer mechanic at Larson’s Truck Sales Inc. followed by employment at Hegg Memorial Hospital in the maintenance department. Leroy continued to provide for his family by working as a hired hand for a local farmer and then during his final years of retirement, a truck driver for Bar-K.
While living in Canton, Leroy enjoyed his time volunteering as a firefighter, singing in the church worship team at Bethany Reformed, playing softball with the local slow-pitch team, and piloting a hot air balloon. Upon moving his family back to Beloit, Leroy began tinkering with hobby farming. During this time, he became a grandpa to 7 grandchildren, and quickly learned to share his John Deere tractor seat with them-blessing them with memories to forever hold.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Howard and Russell.
Leroy is survived by his wife, Nancy; sisters LaVonne (Gene) Cornelius and Sharon (Ed) Rus, and brother Vernon (Julie Ruud). Daughter Shelly (Steve) Meester, son Mike (Mikki) Feekes, son Andy (Melody) Feekes. Grandchildren Nick (Marisa) Meester, Grace Feekes (Jarrin Davey), Ellie (Zach) Swanson, Katie Feekes, Sam Meester, Jackson Feekes and Zoe Feekes. Great grandchildren Hazel Swanson, soon-to-be Baby Meester, Grayson and Hunter Davey and many special nieces and nephews.
There were other special friends and family in Leroy’s life who will greatly miss him, including the guys at Bar-K and his local coffee buddies. www.anderonsandsonsfh.com
