Leona Twedt, age 93, died Monday, December 16, 2019 surrounded by her family at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial services will begin at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 21 at Canton Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Friday from 2-7 p.m., family present 5-7 p.m., at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton.
Leona was born on May 12, 1926 in Perkins Corner, IA to Peter and Grace (Anema) DeKing. She attended school in Canton, SD. She was united in marriage to Olaf Twedt on November 10, 1950 at Eastside Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, SD.
In addition to raising her family, she was employed at Northwestern Bell. In 1965, the family moved to a farm near Canton where they farmed until retiring to Park Rapids, MN in 1979. They returned to Canton in 1987, Olaf died on December 28, 1990, and Leona moved to Washington Crossing in Sioux Falls, SD in 2018.
Leona was a longtime member of Canton Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, assisted with weddings and funerals, folded bulletins, and helped mail the Voice. She enjoyed volunteering at the Canton Senior Center and VFW, bowling, ceramics, and was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed meeting people while passing out samples or working the Coke Shack at Sunshine Foods. She was never late, made great peanut butter balls, and loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Grateful sharing her life are her children, Linda (Jeff) Schartz and Terry Twedt (Kathy), all of Sioux Falls, SD; brother, Wilfred DeKing, Ellsworth, MN; sisters, Gilma (Frank) Brooks, Sioux Falls, SD and Lorena Wojahn, White Bear Lake, MN; grandchildren, Ann (Ben) Abel, Andrew (Katie) Schartz, Brian Twedt (Patience), and Sarah (Kelsey) Anderson; great-grandchildren, Kaidynce, Addison, Harrison, Evelyn, Charlie, Cameron, Espen, Harris, Lily, and Lila; along with numerous extended relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 40 years, Olaf; sisters, Ida, Carol and Gertie; and brothers, Peter and Richard.
We lived next door to the Twedt family when they lived in Canton SD for a short time.
They were a very nice family. Good people.
I just learned of Leona’s passing last night so I’m sorry this is a little late. Leona was a lovely woman who I throughly enjoyed seeing whenever she would visit her brother. Always smiling and willing to give the best hugs. The minute we realized she was in the building we all just had to find her to say hello
I’m glad I got to know her- my sympathies to her entire family. She will definitely be missed
