Judy (Larsgaard) Tobin was born to Roy and Hazel (Sorum) Larsgaard on April 23, 1950 in Canton, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church, Fairview SD. Judy was raised on the family farm in Lincoln County and attended Fairview Center through the eighth grade, and graduated from Canton High School in 1968. She then attended the University of South Dakota where she met her future husband Tom Tobin. Tom and Judy were married at Bethany Lutheran Church on November 28, 1970. The couple continued to live in Vermillion until 1973 when Tom graduated from law school and they moved to Winner and Tom opened his law office. Judy worked part time in the law office and was a homemaker for their growing family.
Over the years, Judy volunteered and was involved in various community organizations, including the Arts Council, the American Cancer Society and ESA. She loved her weekly bowling league and ladies coffee group. She enjoyed playing tennis with Tom and softball and racquetball with friends. As her five children grew up, Judy loved attending all of the sporting events and other activities they were in. She enjoyed substitute teaching, working with pre-schoolers and supporting community events. She also loved to read, play the piano and cheer for the Packers.
Her Christian faith and family were the most important parts of her life. Judy lived for her children, grandchildren and spending time as a family. She was a great cook and proud of her Norwegian heritage. She enjoyed road trips, hunting, shopping and especially Christmas. It was her favorite time of year. Judy loved to bake, decorate every room and celebrate with everyone.
Judy is survived by her husband of 45 years Tom; 5 children, and 11 grandchildren: Brian Tobin (Christine), Christian, Victoria, Sophia, Gabriella and Samuel of Elk River, MN; Justin Tobin of Vermillion, SD; Tara Arnold (Ryan), Amelia, Scarlett and Eleanor of Omaha, NE; Tyler Tobin (Dannette) and Ava of Harrisburg, SD; Travis Tobin (Erin), Gus and Anna of Winner, SD. Other survivors include her mother, Hazel Larsgaard and 5 siblings: Lorene (Charles) Fossum, Romaine Larsgaard, Steve (Becky) Larsgaard, Denise (Don) Koopsma, and Charles (Brenda) Larsgaard, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Roy Larsgaard and brother Kenneth Larsgaard.
Our prayers and sympathy with your family. She will be surely missed.
Tom & family,
I am so sorry to hear about Judy’s sudden passing. It saddens me, even though it’s been years since I’ve seen her. I remember all the time I spent at our home watching the kids, all those years. I really adored Judy, and she was good to me. My prayers are with all of you at this time…
Sincerely,
Ann Pickart Hall

Judy was a part of my life for all of the 16 years I spent in Winner. We first met at the law office where I worked for Tom. She introduced me to ESA, giving me the opportunity to make new and lasting friendships with other women in the community. She was a member of our book club and did her best to give us new perspectives on various books and subjects. We traveled to Washington, D.C. To the U.S. Supreme Court twice and spent many hours together on community projects and other adventures. I am deeply saddened by her passing and my sympathies go out to Tom and her children and grandchildren. I know how much her family meant to her and she will be missed by all who knew her. I was so happy to have shared memories with Tyler in 2015 while attending our respective class reunions. God has her in His hands.
So sorry for you loss Mr. Tobin. May you find comfort with our Lord and Savior Jesus. May God’s grace and mercy be upon you and your family.
Sincerely, Tanya Stangle
My sincere sympathy and condolences on Judy’s death. I am so grateful to read of her Christian faith and love for her family. I remember going to stay at the farm overnight and taking the school bus in the morning as ninth graders at Canton High School…quite the adventure for a ‘city’ (Canton!!) girl! I will be praying for her, Tom, and your whole family during this difficult time! May Jesus wrap His arms around all of you!
Ray and I and our family are sorry for your loss. She will missed by her family and the community. Our sympathy to all of you. Judy Bartels
Dear Tobin Family: I a so sorry for your loss. Please accept my sincere condolences. It breaks our hearts when death separates us from the ones we love so much. The Bible assures us that God sees our pain and sorrow and has promised that soon “death will be swallowed up forever.”(Isaiah 25:8) He will heal our broken hearts by resurrecting our precious loved ones to life again.(Acts 24:15) Until then, I hope the memories of Judith and these promises from God comfort you in the days ahead.
I just learned of Judy’s death. My thoughts and prayers go out to Tom and her family. Judy and I were best friends in high school and were roommates our first year in college at USD. Our similar farm backgrounds and church connection gave us the foundation for a lifelong friendship. If I had know of her death I would have been at her funeral. We shared wonderful times, talks and adventures. Even tho our adult years were spent in different states and we saw each other infrequently, I will never forget her warmth, sense of humor, her love for her family and friends. Pam Hanson Van Ast
