James was born on January 10, 1946 in Canton, SD to Andrew and Ruby (Strand) Quien. He grew up in the Harrisburg area and attended Dayton 33 Country School. He served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War.
After his discharge, Jim worked at a packing plant, for Wright Tree Service, as a bouncer for local bars, and most recently as a farm hand. He enjoyed movies, target shooting and motorcycles. He was a member of the SF&G Motorcycle Club.
Grateful for sharing his life are his son, Jeremiah Steenhoven; sisters, Mary (Keith) McClung, Harrisburg, SD and Rachel (Burt) Sundvold, Blue Springs, MO; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Hazel Rogers; and brothers, Jack and Hank.
We want to extend our deepest sympathy on the loss of your brother. May you cherish all the memories you have made with him. Our prayers are with you and your family.
Thinking of all the fun times we had growing up with Uncle Jim! After I was married and living in IA, we would travel across SD with Jim and Grandma Ruby to see my mom, dad and family for Thanksgiving! It was always a crazy and fun ride! We had a great time traveling … playing cards in the car, and laughing. Rest in peace Jim!
So sorry for the loss of Jim, he was a cousin and very important to my late husband Alan Trowbridge, and always so nice to me when I saw him.
To say he was an original is a gross understatement. Outspoken, funny and ornery as HELL.. That’s the Quien men as a whole. He was the embodiment of everything that people LOVE (and tolerate) about our family. He wasn’t afraid to love you.. or tell you off and I think that’s a beautiful thing.. You had a heart of gold and knew how to use it. Friends in every place, low or otherwise. Sure you may have given me a few swigs of your beer when I was a toddler, Uncle Jim…Maybe good judgement wasn’t a huge priority but you always brought a smile to my face when I saw you. You will be missed by many but you are a legend that is carried on in our tall stories of a man like no other. Heaven will surely be a little more exciting with you around!
He was a Great Uncle and he was so nice to his nieces and nephews may he Rest In Peace will miss you Uncle Jim Phillip Rogers
Blessings from the Lord to the Quien family. Ruby as I remember was a friend of my mother Goldie and Hank was a friend as well.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
