Hazel Selma Haugland, born July 24, 1922, in Jerauld County, near Wessington Springs, SD, passed away at Canton Good Samaritan Center, Canton, SD, on November 9, 2020, from COVID-19, at the age of 98. A graveside service will begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday, November 13 at Our Saviors Lutheran Cemetery, rural Inwood, IA. Visitation will be held in the church one hour prior to the service. Mask and social distancing will be required.
Hazel was the first of 5 children born to Tom and Gertrude (Reese) Haugland. At the age of 21, Hazel became the matriarch of the family when Gertrude passed away. Hazel continued in that family role throughout her lifetime and created a home for her father, siblings and at times, nieces and nephews.
Hazel loved Jesus, gardening, sewing and Bible studies with Our Savior’s women’s groups, visiting with family and friends, supporting charities dear to her heart, reading and playing Scrabble.
Hazel was preceded in death by parents, Tom and Gertrude Haugland, siblings, Selmer Haugland, Thelma (Gunnar) Lindaas, Ruth (Alvin) Olson and sisters-in-law Isabellle Haugland and Ethel Haugland.
Hazel is survived by her brother, Helmer Haugland, nieces and nephews, Grace (Jon) Romaine, Lois (Don) Kahl, Donna (Bernard Thompson) Haugland, Stanley (Cynthia) Haugland, Steven (Marybeth) Olson, Tim Olson, Arnold (Evamarie) Lindaas, and Marit (Ryan) Larson.
