Esther M. Sweeter

September 19, 1919 - February 11, 2013

Visitation: Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Service: Her funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at Canton Lutheran Church, with burial at Forest Hill Cemetery near Canton.

Canton.  Esther M. Sweeter, age 93, passed away Monday, Feb. 11, 2013 at Sanford Hospital in Aberdeen, SD.  Her funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at Canton Lutheran Church, with burial at Forest Hill Cemetery near Canton.  Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

 

Esther Maxine Sweeter was born September 19, 1919 on a farm near Canton, SD to Oscar and Ethel (Leonard) Johnson.  She received her education at several country schools near Canton. 

 

Esther married Gerhard Sweeter December 15, 1940 in Lennox, SD.  They made their home on a farm near Canton, where her husband farmed and raised cattle.   Her husband died in 2007.  Esther moved to Ipswich in 2009 to be near her daughter, Carole. 

 

Completing a correspondence art course from a commercial art school, Esther developed a love of art through her drawings and paintings.  Her family cherishes many of her works.  She enjoyed collecting antiques and unique items such as clocks and watches.  She also enjoyed her flower gardens, birds, and square-dancing. 

 

She is survived by her children: Larry (Dorothy) Sweeter, Lawrence, KS, Linda (Ron) Aten, Abilene, TX, and Carole Curtis, Ipswich, SD; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Doris Pedersen, Canton, SD; and two nieces and a nephew.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Orville, sister, Vera Bong, and her son-in-law, Dale Curtis.
