Douglas Paul Larson, age 67, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD surrounded by his loved ones.   Funeral services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2025 at Redeemer Free Lutheran Church, Canton, SD.  Visitation, with family present, will be Sunday, March 30 from 2-4 p.m. at Redeemer Free Lutheran Church.

Doug was born on March 22, 1958 in Canton, SD to Palmer and Vera Jean Larson.  He graduated from Canton High School in 1976.  After graduation, he started farming full-time on his family farm east of Worthing, SD.  He married his high school sweetheart, Nanetta VanDeStroet, on July 8, 1977.  Doug and Netta made their home near the family farm where they raised their 3 children: Josh, Stacy, and Kasi.  Doug spent his life raising his family, farming the land, and most recently enjoying his grandchildren.  Doug enjoyed restoring old tractors, tractor pulling, having coffee with his best friend Len on Sunday mornings, driving around the farm, checking on the crops, and quiet time at home with his family.  He lived for his grandchildren.  He loved spending summer days at the racetrack and summer nights at the ball fields.  He enjoyed sitting courtside at basketball and volleyball games, matside at wrestling matches, and attending all the kids’ school activities.  He also enjoyed the ‘small moments’ like cruising in the golf cart, playing a game of dice, picking up the grandkids for ice-cream, and watching them running and playing in his yard.  Doug had just recently decided to retire after 47 years of farming.  Anyone who knew Doug knew he was a quiet man who worked hard but loved harder.

Doug’s survivors include his wife, Netta; 3 children, Josh (Kari) Larson of Worthing, SD and their children Oliver, Bodie, and Vera; Stacy (Justis) Lund of Lennox, SD and their children Maci, Gerrit, and Brooks; Kasi (Bryan) Roberts of Canton, SD and their children Crayten, Kambree, Kenli, and Cruz; sister, Cheryl Carlson of Harrisburg, SD; brother-in-law, John Boer of Alvord, IA; 5 extended children, Hunter and Trapper Gemelli, and  Gena, Katreina, and Shantelle Blade; mother-in-law, Leona VanDeStroet; Netta’s siblings, Kristi (Butch) Fjellanger of Jasper, MN; Jolene (Kelly) Nelson of Canton, SD; Aldon (Brenda) VanDeStroet of Colton, SD; Galen (Carol) VanDeStroet of Garretson, SD; Jeff (Jackie) VanDeStroet of Canton, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

Doug was proceeded in death by his parents, Palmer and Jean Larson; sister, Marcia Boer; brother-in-law, Steve Carlson; father-in-law, Gerrit VanDeStroet; and niece, Angie Carlson.

Doug! Most certainly one of the good guys. Loved his dad too. Grew up close and went to the same country school. Sunny Side District #27. Performed in Christmas plays with 17 kids in the whole school. His dad was on the school board and purchased the “drinking crock” we all drank out of when all school property was auctioned off. Many stories of old times with Doug. RIP Doug. Arlin.
