Dorothy Hamran, age 86, died Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at Fellowship Village in Inwood, IA.  A memorial service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 9, 2019 at Redeemer Free Lutheran Church in Canton, SD.  Visitation will be Thursday, August 8, 2019 from 2-7 p.m., family present from 5-7 p.m., at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton.

Dorothy Lorraine Kidd was born June 8, 1933 in Hudson, SD to Earl and Fannie (Lewis) Kidd.  She attended Harrisburg High School.   She married Olav “Ole” Hamran on September 20, 1954 in Jackson, MN.  She was mother to 4, grandma to 8, great-grandma to 3, sister to 6, aunt to 14, and a friend to many.  She loved her family and also her Savior Jesus Christ.

Dorothy had a passion for helping others.  Her mischievous sense of humor was contagious and a trait she passed on to her children and grandchildren.  She had a love for life and was not afraid of hard work.  The word “no” was not in her vocabulary. She enjoyed playing cards, cooking and baking, listening to twangy country music, watching “The Wheel” and Turner Classic Movies, and word search puzzles.  Birthdays were important to her and she always made sure that she baked your favorite cake.  Baking fresh bread (buns, pigs-in-the-blanket, and her famous sweet rolls) was a Saturday tradition, leading up to coffee with neighbors and friends.  The smell of fresh bread always triggers vivid memories and emotions.

In addition to raising her children, she worked at Augustana Academy, Northwestern Bell Telephone, K-Products, Canton Good Samaritan Center, Keystone Treatment Center, and most recently AquariumPlants.com.

Dorothy is survived by her  children: Julie (Lane) Jervik, Hudson, SD; Diane (Troy) Balk, Sioux Falls, SD; Mark Hamran, Tampa, FL; Paul (Jenny) Hamran, Canton, SD; grandchildren: Nicole (Ben) Westra, Christopher  Jervik (Kailey Kuhnert), Alex Jervik, Chad Hamran, Alexis Abbott, Brady Abbott, Kaitlyn Abbott and  Jonah Hamran; great-grandchildren, Ruby Westra, Abel Westra and Otto Jervik; brothers, Kenneth (Bette) Kidd, Sioux Falls, SD and Jerry (Vel) Kidd, Kansas City, MO;  sisters-in-law, Sherrill Kidd, Sioux Falls, SD and Asborg Hamran, Inwood, IA; numerous relatives in Norway, lifelong friends Chuck, Betty, and Cathy Tanck, Sioux Falls, SD; and countless other friends and family.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Ole; parents, Earl and Fannie Kidd; Ole’s parents, Oluf and Anna Hamran; sister, Marie Erwin; brothers: Marvin Kidd, Carol Dean Kidd, Earl Kidd Jr, and Alvin Kidd; sisters-in-law, Beverly Kidd and Anna Maria Hamran.
