Arlene Louise Markle, age 89, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. A Celebration of Arlene’s Life will begin at 11:00 a.m. SATURDAY JULY 27, 2024 at Canton Lutheran Church, Canton, SD. Family will greet visitors one hour prior to the service.
Arlene was born on March 7, 1935 in Beresford, SD to Raymond and Ruby (Twedt) Steenholdt. She graduated from Canton High School in 1953. She was united in marriage to Donald Markle on March 26, 1954 in Canton, SD. The couple made their home in Canton.
In addition to raising her daughters, Arlene worked for Peterson Paint Store, Canton Food Center, Northwestern Bell, First Bank and Trust, the Canton School District and the Canton Good Samaritan Society. She also ironed for several families in Canton.
In her spare time, Arlene enjoyed bowling, fishing, playing cards, especially Yahtzee with Dorothy, watching or attending sporting events, and her Thursday pie day with her friends. In her younger days, she also loved to roller skate. Arlene cherished time with her family and loved going to her grandkids and great-grandkids activities. She will be remembered for her willingness to help her family and friends.
Grateful for sharing her life are her daughters, Deb Hoogendoorn of Rock Rapids, IA and Sheila Nelson of Sioux Falls, SD; 6 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Karen Miller; sister-in-law, Betty Severson; brother-in-law, Kenny Baatz; along with numerous extended relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Kenny Steenholdt and Curtis Steenholdt; sister, Judy Baatz; and sons-in-law Mike Hoogendoorn and Terry Nelson.

I remember as a kid going to your house so our parents could play cards!! Loved that, Arlene was always fun to visit with, know that you are all in my prayers

I feel so blessed that we were able to visit Arlene just a few weeks ago & reminisce together about the days when my parents, Bob & Lois Smethurst would get together with Don & Arlene to play cards while us girls played house with dolls!
