Arden Hitzemann, age 90, died Saturday, June 20, 2026 at Good Samaritan Society Canton under hospice care. A Celebration of Arden’s Life will take place at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 26, 2026 at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, SD. Family will greet visitors one hour prior to the service.
Arden was born on November 18, 1935 in Akron, IA to Henry and Helen (Van Hagel) Hitzemann. He attended school in Akron, graduating from Akron High School. He married Janice Baldwin in June of 1959 in Akron, IA. The couple lived in Akron, IA and Sioux Falls, SD before moving to Canton, SD. Michael, Mark, Dave, and Cindy were born to this union.
Arden work for a dairy, Augustana College as a sports advisor, the Canton Co-Op Station, the Canton Municipal Bar, and spent over 30 years at Canton Concrete. When he wasn’t working, he was a boy scouts leader and enjoyed bowling, golfing, and fishing. He was also a talented pool player and nearly unbeatable playing horseshoes.
Grateful for sharing his life are his sons, Michael Hitzemann, Mark Hitzemann, and Dave Hitzemann; grandchildren, Christina Hitzemann, Jami Jo Hitzemann, Leonard (Melinda) Hitzemann, Wade Hitzemann, Derrick (Stacia) Hitzemann, Katy Ann Enboden, and Suzanne Patenode; many great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Hitzemann and Helen Hitzemann; brothers and sister-in-law, Don Baldwin, Glen (Jan) Baldwin and Dan Stortroen; along with numerous extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Janice in 2023; daughter Cindy Patenode; daughters-in-law Patty Hitzemann and Holly Hitzemann; brothers Arnold, Marvin, George, and Robert “Bob”; sister Helen Meske and Esther Neuneighbor; sisters-in-law Linda Baldwin, Nancy Rooney, Margaret Baldwin and Lori Stortroen; and brothers-in-law Roger Baldwin and Dale Baldwin.
