Ronald Lyle Aasheim, age 87, died Tuesday, May 5, 2026 in hospice care at Canton Good Samaritan Center, Canton, SD. Funeral services will begin at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 9, 2026 at Lands Lutheran Church, rural Hudson, SD, with burial to follow at Lands Lutheran Cemetery. Family will greet visitors one hour prior to the service.
Ronald, the oldest of seven children, was born August 8, 1938 in Canton, SD to Henry Linford Aasheim and Melvina Coralin (Groon) Aasheim. He was baptized and confirmed at Lands Lutheran Church in rural Hudson, SD where he remained a lifelong member. He attended and graduated from country school at Highland District #24. Following school, he worked on the farm for his father, neighbors and relatives. He also worked for Sweetman Construction in Sioux Falls, SD driving the maintainer and building bridges and roads. It was during this time that Ronald was drafted into the Army in 1960. He served two years, stationed first at Ft. Carson, Colorado where his job was driving a Caterpillar D8H dozer pushing rock to be crushed. Although the Army was not his favorite memory, he was proud that he and his crew covered every street in Colorado Springs with crushed rock. He was also stationed at Camp McCoy near Tomah, Wisconsin for a portion of his Army career where he also ran a dozer. Following his time in the Army, he returned to the Canton, SD area where he continued doing what was his life calling and brought him so much joy, farming with his brother Lynn. Together they farmed for over 60 years. Ronald also worked for Highland Township for years driving the maintainer. He was a lover of animals, raising cattle and hogs and always had a trusty dog with him. He enjoyed watching baseball, especially the New York Yankees. He loved to tease his nieces and nephews relentlessly and all cherish those memories. He kept an eye out for wildlife at his acreage, loved tinkering on machinery and tractors, and he was content to lead a peaceful, simple and happy life.
Grateful for having shared his life are his siblings and their spouses: Lavonne Dahl, Delma Pederson, Lynn (Martha) Aasheim, Curtis (lone) Aasheim, Cheryl (Ron) Haden and Dean (Annette) Aasheim, and many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law Darwin Dahl and Derald Pedersen, niece Valerie (Pedersen) McClure and nephews Buz Dahl, Chris Kayl and Shawn Adams.

I always thought of him as a twin to your dad. His quiet, strong, and constant personality will be remembered. hugs and prayers to your family.
