Neal Carter Anderson, age 90 died unexpectedly Monday, April 27, 2026 at his home in rural Beresford, SD. He passed less than 50 feet from where was born – exactly as he wanted.
Carter was born on the family farm on January 12, 1936, to Arla L. (Twedt) and Neal W. Anderson. He was the second of three children, older sister Raemelee and younger sister Molly. His early schooling was in a local one room school house and then he attended and graduated high school from Augustana Academy in Canton, SD.
Carter and his father Neal worked the family farm and ran a Custom Combining business that took them from Kansas to North Dakota every summer flying back periodically to attend to the farm in their own small plane. Carter was a proud member of the SD Army National Guard, and went through basic training at Fort Sill, OK and served on an artillery crew.
Carter married Marlys Mae Borman on November 28, 1970 in Rock Rapids, IA. The couple made their home and in rural Beresford and were married for almost 54 years before Marlys passed in 2024. Together they operated the family farm and were blessed with two children, Brian and Kay.
When not farming, Carter also worked at various other jobs as well – a welder for a trailer manufacturer in Canton, SD and he and Marlys had a small used car business. Carter loved to fish and spent many weekends fishing for walleyes on the Missouri River, he took body shop classes and worked on classic and modern cars with a particular fondness for 1950s Fords and 1965 through 1973 Ford Mustangs. He officially retired from farming in 2014 at the age of 78 and then he and Marlys travelled, spent time with their grandchildren, and tested their luck at the casino from time to time. Never far from his side through retirement was his faithful blue heeler companion, Dog. Carter was a long-time member of Lands Lutheran Church.
Carter is survived by his son, Brian (Stephanie) Anderson; daughter, Kay (Tom) Kessler; grandchildren, Brendan, Brogan and Lindsay Anderson; sister Molly Uden; along with numerous extended relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Marlys, his parents and sister Raemelee Loen.
