Harriet Hilda Hermann Kuehl of Canton, South Dakota, was born January 1, 1936, near Canton, South Dakota to Hilda Katherine (Langfeldt) Hermann and Earnest Paul Hermann. She died Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at the age of 90 years.
She graduated from Canton High School in 1953. In 1954 she married Charles William Kuehl. They farmed north of Canton where they had 3 daughters.
Harriet was involved in many community activities over the years. She was a member of Canton Lutheran Church and Ruth Circle. She also participated in an extension club and was on the Extension Board for Lincoln County. Harriet served as a 4-H club leader and worked to organize open class at the county fair. On the farm, Harriet enjoyed beautifying her yard with flowers and trees. She was a great baker (as our bean walkers would attest), enjoyed sewing, and loved her farm cats and dogs, especially Poochie. She also enjoyed traveling and seeing new places. For years we would have Sunday family get togethers that included being outside in the pool, grilling, or meals at a favorite restaurant. Harriet loved her peanut butter toast, wild caught salmon, and sharing desserts. Listening to music and band concerts in the park, Broadway musicals, and attending plays at Prairie Repertory Theatre were favorite activities. Harriet really enjoyed watching sports. She particularly loved basketball (college and NBA) and golf. For years the family would gather to watch the first week of March Madness and add to her list of college mascots. Harriet was always ready for a car ride to look at crops, flowers, and houses, with an ice cream along the way.
Perhaps most importantly, Harriet encouraged her daughters to have no fear in pursuing their dreams and developing their talents, whether through school activities, music lessons, or higher education. She was the gentle loving glue in her family who always wanted the best for others. Harriet lived at home until her death. She will be greatly missed.
Harriet was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Delbert Julius Hermann, and four sisters, Ella Marie (Hermann) Feldman Nelson, Isabelle Mary Hermann, Lyda Erma (Hermann) Short, and Iola Alma (Hermann) Short.
She is survived by her daughters Peggy Gwendolyn Kuehl, Sandy Diane Kuehl, and Karla Kaye Kuehl (Aldo Lahkdar), and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In lieu of flowers, gifts can be sent to Canton Lutheran Church to support preservation of the stained-glass windows (Restoring Radiance) at 124 E 2nd St, Canton, SD, 57013.
