Eva (Dozark) Vreugdenhil

Service: Burial of Eva’s cremains will be at noon Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD.

Service: A Celebration of Eva’s Life will begin at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at Canton United Methodist Church, Canton, SD

Eva (Dozark) Vreugdenhil, age 92, died Sunday, September 29, 2024 at Sanford USD Medical Center.  Burial of Eva’s cremains will be at noon Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD.  Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at Canton United Methodist Church, Canton, SD.  A Celebration of Eva’s Life will begin at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at Canton United Methodist Church.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Canton Senior Center.

Eva Jo Ann Johnson was born on a farm near Stickney, SD to Albert and Jessie Johnson on March 9, 1932.   She attended all 8 years of country school before graduating from Stickney High School in 1950. She furthered her education at Mitchell Business College, graduating in 1951.

Eva taught one year at Hughes School at Stickney, SD. She then worked at Hardware Supply in Mitchell, SD where she met Fordyce Dozark.   They were married on September 6, 1953. The couple made their home in Mitchell and were blessed with two children, Susan and Terry.

They moved back to Stickney in 1955 and farmed. In 1961, they bought and ran the Gateway Motel in Canton, SD until selling it in 1973. She then began working for Town and Country Mobile Homes in Canton. After moving to Sioux Falls in 1974, she worked for Pace Mfg., Sunshine Foods, and Qualified Presort. In addition, she volunteered at Sioux Valley for 10 years in the gift shop and accounts payable.

Eva was a social butterfly who loved people, playing cards, and spending time with her family.  She was also an active member of the Canton Senior Center and Canton United Methodist Church.

Fordyce died in 1995. Eva married Edwin Vreugdenhil on April 18, 2004. Edwin died in November 2017.

Eva is survived by her children, Susan (Leon) Anderson Canton, SD and Terry (Laura) Dozark, Beloit, IA; stepson, Delwyn (Mitz) Vreugdenhil,  Parkston SD; stepdaughters,  Wyonne (Lenny) Miller, Sioux City, IA, and Karen (Calvin) Veurink, Harrison, SD;  seven grandkids; 15 great-grandkids; 3 great-great grandkids; several step-grandkids; sister-in-law, Eunice Vanden Berge, Corsica, SD;  brother-in law; Larry (Donna) Vreugdenhil, Stickney ,SD; along with numerous extended family and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Jessie Johnson and husbands, Fordyce Dozark and Edwin Vreugdenhil.

    Sorry for your loss. I only got to meet Eva one time…she sat at my mom’s table during her short stay at Fellowship Village and we just had lunch together the week before. She was kind and had nice table conversation with us that day. May God provide comfort and joy in the memories you shared with her
