Brendan Monroe Peterson was born on February 23, 1980, in Sioux Falls, SD, to William (Bill) and Vicki (Heiskell) Peterson. He passed away on September 20, 2024, at his home in Mobridge, SD at the age of 44.
Brendan grew up in Canton, SD. In his early childhood, he enjoyed spending time with his grandpas and cousins. Some of the things they enjoyed together were hunting, fishing, and anything else you can think of doing outdoors. Brendan attended school in Canton and graduated from high school in 1998. After high school, Brendan attended South Dakota State University where he obtained a degree in Wildlife Biology. After graduating college, Brendan accepted a position through the State of South Dakota in the Game, Fish, and Parks Department in Sioux Falls. After a few years, he moved out to Chamberlain, SD in a new role with the state and eventually ending up with his dream job as a Wildlife Damage Specialist in Mobridge, SD. He ended his career doing what he loved most.
At a young age, Brendan found his love for the outdoors through his relationship with his cousins, uncles, and grandpas. Brendan and his family would get together to have shooting range gatherings anytime it was possible. He remained an avid outdoorsman throughout his life and loved spending as much time as possible with his friends and family, hunting and fishing. His favorite sidekick, his dog Lady, was with him for most of his adventures in Mobridge, which included hunting pheasants, coyotes, and taking rides on the 4-wheeler. Brendan was one of the best shots, and anyone that knew Brendan would most likely agree. His co-workers in Mobridge said, “He was the best shot in the office”, and if you asked his friends and family, you would get the same answer. Brendan was a strong-willed man with few words, he would do anything for anyone. He never boasted about his accomplishments but received several awards during his time with the state.
Brendan is survived by his parents, Bill and Vicki Peterson; siblings Keelan (Lindsey) Peterson, Emily (Joey) Peterson, Landon (Randee) Peterson; grandpa Omar Peterson; grandma Helen Heiskell, all of Canton, SD. Brendan was the proud uncle of 8 nieces and nephews: Jaylee, Lexie, Kaleb, Carmyn, Knox, Milo, Willow and Oaklee. Brendan was adored by his aunts and uncles: Alicia (Fred) Van Bockern, Canton, SD; Joe (Nancy) Peterson, Castle Rock, CO; Julie Norland, Augusta, GA; Brad Peterson, Sioux Falls, SD; John (Leah) Peterson, Canton, SD; Carmen (Clair) Gard, Canton, SD; Reavis Heiskell Jr., Canton, SD; Lori Heiskell, Canton SD; Tina Peterson, Sioux Falls, SD. He is also survived by an abundance of cousins and close friends.
Brendan was preceded in death by his grandpa Reavis Heiskell Sr, grandma Grace and her husband Wally Feller, and uncle Tom Norland.

My sympathies to Brendan’s family, he was a coworker ever since he moved to Mobridge. He was a great guy, very dedicated to his work & an all around good guy. My prayers are with all of you.
I had the pleasure of getting to know Brendan over the years. On occasion he’d accompany me on my traplines on the Standing Rock reservation. He was well respected in the area and very dedicated to his job with the GFP. He will be missed!
Our deepest sympathy in your loss. With love and prayers. Bob and Margaret

I’m heartbroken to hear of Brendan’s passing. I literally spoke to him within the month and he was so proud of his accomplishment of paying off all debts and living his life debt free unlike many today. It’s so unfair! He worked so hard, made sacrifices and now this! I’m speechless! I can’t put words that even reach the level of loss your family must be feeling. My heart goes out to you Bill, Vicki, Keelan, Landon and Emily! He was one of my best friends and we always stayed in touch talking about the past and staying current in eachother’s lives. He will be missed FOREVER! You never forget a person like him. RIP brother, I love you man! 😢
We are so sorry for your loss Bill and Vickie. May family and friends give you love and God give you his peace.Ron and Sandy

Vicki and Bill,
This is difficult to comprehend. Brendan left a lasting mark on my life as a friend and mentor. Brendan and I had many good times in the field, lakes, trap lines, reloading bench and occasionally the classroom. Whether we were shooting clays, target shooting, fishing or hunting we always had a friendly competition and more times than not he came out on top.
He truly was a one of a kind guy. I will dearly miss Brendan. My heart is broken for you guys.
He was a Good Neighbor. Will be missed by many. He never had much to say. His dog LADY would sit by the fence patiently waiting for a treat from my Wife who adored her – never heard her bark.
So very sorry, to the entire family for your loss. Prayers for healing!!!
Bill, Vicki and family. We have lived next to each other for most of our children’s lives. Our children have basically grown up together. They have got along with each other, played together, fought with each other and I believed loved each other in there own way. We think of your family as part of our family and our hearts go out to all of you. Not much anyone can say at this time to help you heal. Only time can hopefully help you through this. Our sympathies go out to you in the fullest. We are hear for you if you need help with anything.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. It is such a tragedy to lose a child. He sounded like a wonderful son. Love and hugs
Brendan did not have to say much. He learned a lot by being a good listener. He could answer you with just a smile sometimes with a little chuckle or nod added. Extraordinarily talented. Extraordinarily patient. Not a pretentious or conceited bone in his body. An awesome man. Few people on this earth could match his talents. He would occasionally send a picture such as 3 leg hold trapped coyotes at one trap set location. I saw that picture and thought that boy is something. It immediately went up on our basement hall of fame. I bragged about it to everyone I saw for weeks. Brendan lived an awesome life in a beautiful place. His heaven on earth. Now he ( too early for us) is in that more beautiful and awesome place no doubt smiling at the Lord and the Lord smiling back at him probably with an added nod to our amazing man. There is some measure of comfort knowing where he is and whom he is with. We are grieving and he is dancing, probably next to his grandpa Reavis. Maybe they are firing up a plane to go look for coyotes together and giving each other the thumbs up. No doubt grandpa Reavis is looking at Brendan with great pride as he introduces him to his new friends. I can see Brendan with as wide a smile as ever.
Brendan is awesome, as fine a tribute to his amazing parents as there could be. Thank you Bill and Vicki for giving him to us.
I will think about you, Brendan every time I am afield or afloat. Love you.
Uncle John
When we flew together, he was on time, very good shot. Nice young man, he liked being in the airplane. Truly sorry, we need more people like him.
We are so sorry for loss. Hold your memories of Brendan close to your heart and he will always be there.
God bless you
