Richard “Dick” Dean Loe, age 79, died Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at Sanford Canton-Inwood Hospital. Memorial services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hudson, SD. Visitation, with family present, will be Tuesday, January 16 from 5-7 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home, Canton, SD.
Dick was born on February 5, 1944 in Canton, SD to Martin and Olive (Larson) Loe. He grew up on the family farm south of Newton Hills and graduated from Canton High School in 1962. In his youth, he was very active in 4-H and enjoyed going to activities at Moe Parish Park.
Dick served his country in the SD Air National Guard as an aircraft mechanic for over 22 years. He was also proud member of the Hudson Legion, where he served in various roles. Dick worked as a truck driver/snow plow operator for the SD Department of Transportation in Canton, SD and later in Sioux Falls. He retired in 2008. In addition, he served on the Lincoln County Weed Board for many years.
Dick was a busybody who enjoyed tinkering, welding, politics, working on tractors, and visiting with friends and neighbors.
Dick is survived by his brother, Paul (Pam) Loe; nephews, Brian (Samantha) McManus, Jeren Thorsby, and Hans Loe (Natasha Gardner); niece, Marin (Jordan) Thorsby; 3 grand-nephews; 1 grand-niece; along with many extended relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin & Olive Loe and his grandparents, Hans & Hannah Loe and Franklin & Anna Larson.
God Bless you and keep you safe in the arms of Jesus Richard , you were a friend to many I heard although I did not know you very well . God Bless him and shower him with Mercy and your Love

When ever you needed help with mechanics, Dick would help.
I had problems with a motorcycle as a youth, Richard showed me how to fix it.
Was always a great neighbor
just a great friend, will miss all the conversations from over the years.
I grew up next to Richard and the Loe family. They, and the Sorums, Knutson’s, Koopsma’s etc. were a tight community. Richard (Dick) was such a joy to talk to. After I left SD for science, Dick would call me “Dr. Dirt” – for my interest in soil. I will miss hearing that on my next visit to Canton. I am so sorry to learn of Richard’s death, but I want to celebrate the joy he, and the Loe’s, brought to our community. And also, my best wishes to Paul and his family.
So sorry to hear about the passing of Dick.He was a friendly guy & could crack jokes very quickly.Dick would help all the neighbors out when they needed help.Dick was a great mechanic.Dick loved to work on tractors,cars,pickups & even 🏍️ motorcycles & combines.Our sympathies are with his brother Paul & Pam Loe & the rest of the Loe family.Dick loved his country (The United States) & loved serving in the Air National Guard.Dick will be dearly missed by all.May God wrap his arms around you & give you peace.
