Service: A graveside service at Beaver Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Canton, SD will follow the visitation.
John Vanderwerf, age 87, died Friday, July 21, 2023 at Sanford USD Medical Center. A visitation, with family present, will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2023 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, SD. A graveside service at Beaver Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Canton, SD will follow the visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the charity of your choice.
John was born on October 21, 1935 to Chester and Grace (Meinders) Vanderwerf. He grew up and attended school in Canton. John was a quiet man who loved to farm, tinker and listen to WNAX radio. He also did cement, electrical and mechanical work through the years.
John is survived by his 3 sisters, Lena Brower, Alice Fluit, and Mary (Mike) Vandekieft; brother-in-law, Paul De Young; sisters-in-law, Betty Vanderwerf and Marlys Vanderwerf; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Sam, Harry, and Pete; sisters, Annie De Young and Shirley Nelson; brothers-in-law, Alvin Brower, Richard Nelson, and John Fluit; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Vanderwerf.

John was a good man and friend, blessings to his family. I will miss his conversations and his time he shared with me about he life and family. We always had a few good laughs. I will continue to practice making his favorite Christmas treat, maybe someday I will get them right.
