Service: Private family services will be held.
Richard Lynn Burgess, age 77, formerly of Canton, SD died Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD after contracting Covid. Private family services will be held. Memorials may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project or Canton First Baptist Church.
Richard was born on November 14, 1945 in Canton, SD to Herbert and Wava (Hoover) Burgess. He graduated from Canton High School in 1964. In 1965 he joined the US Army where he spent some time in Germany. After his discharge in 1967, he worked for John Morrells & Co until his mental health issues forced him to retire.
Richard was able to cope with his mental health for many years with help from his family and his church family at First Baptist Church in Canton. As his issues progressed, he eventually required in-patient care. After several placements did not meet his needs, he found his home at Sunset Manor in Irene, SD. Richard’s family is grateful for the excellent care he received at Sunset Manor.
Richard loved football, especially the KC Chiefs. He collected NFL helmets and enjoyed visits and calls from family. In his younger years, he enjoyed buying a new Cadillac every year. He was also active in his church.
Grateful for sharing his life are his sisters, Karen Burgess-Gibson (Patrick) and Barb (Warren) Hartland, both of Sioux Falls, SD; brother, Layne (Marcia) Burgess, Canton, SD; along with several nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents.
I remember Richard very good. He was around the same age
as my older brothers. Plus my mom & dad were friends with
his mom & dad. Has been many years since I have seen him
but remember him as polite & friendly.
A beautiful tribute to Richard. May he Rest in Peace.
So very sorry for your loss.
