C. Anona Thorson, age 93, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012 at Sanford Canton-Inwood Hospital. Funeral services will be at 2 PM Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Lands Lutheran Church rural Hudson, SD with burial following in the church cemetery. Anona was born May 4, 1918 on a farm in Lincoln County, South Dakota, to Sam K. and Vida P. (Alness) Ulrikson. She attended country school and graduated from Augustana Academy in Canton in 1935. She then moved to Chicago, IL where she graduated from Lutheran Deaconess School of Nursing in 1939.
She married Cameron Hall in 1944 and they moved to Canton in 1949.
Anona married Charles Thorson in 1961. She was a registered nurse at Canton-Inwood Hospital for 37 years and served as director of nursing for 10 years retiring in 1987. She was an active member at Lands Lutheran Church, serving the church in many capacities. Anona was a member of Extension Club and South Dakota Nursing Association. She enjoyed baking, sewing, and gardening.
Those grateful for having shared her life are: her children Cathryn (John) Olson, Johnstown, CO; Cameron A. (MaryAnn) Hall, Sheridan, WY; Robert (Lela) Hall, Canton, SD; Elizabeth Melton, Casper, WY; and William Thorson, Canton, SD and special friend Wendy Hass, Sioux Falls, SD; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her sister Avonelle Sogn, Beresford, SD; sisters-in-law Vera Gilbertson, Sioux Falls, SD and Alice (John) Evans, Williams, IA; and brother-in-law Norm (Nila) Thorson, Belle Fourche, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles, two brothers Homer and Kerwin, sister Lois, and infant brother Lyle.
Dear Andy, Mary Ann and Family, SO sorry to learn of your mother’s passing. I have fond memories of Anona and your family over the years, at Augie events & Lands Lutheran events. I know she’ll be missed by many. My sympathy, love and prayers to all, Faith
