Daryl was born on September 11, 1931 in Dallas County, IA to Roy B. and Lida E. (Randolph) Halling. He grew up in Dallas County, graduated from Washington Township High School in 1949, and later attended Buena Vista University. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He married Loretta Welch on December 16, 1951 in Minburn, IA.
After his discharge, the couple lived in IA and farmed with his family. In 1960, the family moved to the Chicago area when Daryl began working for the Milwaukee Railroad. The family moved to Canton, SD in 1965 where he remained until his death. Daryl retired from the railroad in 1978. He then worked at the telephone company and ended his career at Shakstad Electric, retiring in 1996. After retirement, he drove school bus until age 80.
Daryl coached Legion and VFW baseball, was a devoted St. Louis Cardinals fan, loved attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, collected golf balls and railroad memorabilia, and enjoyed working with his tools. His passion later in life was the VFW. He was very active on the local, state, and national level. He was a past post, district, and state commander. He also served as the State Judge Advocate and State Surgeon. He was a member of the National POW/MIA Committee, the National Security Committee, and was Vice Chairman of the National Veterans Employment and Training Committee. In addition, he was a member of the local Honor Guard and raised the flag at home football games for many years.
Grateful for sharing his life are his wife of 68 years, Loretta; children, Teresa, Sioux Falls, SD, Jim (Dawn) Harrisburg, SD and Don, Edwardsville, IL; grandchildren, Daryl, Andrew (Jessica), Hailey, Courtney, Sydney, Seth, Carley, and Tyler; great-granddaughter, McKenna; sister-in-law, Dorothy Halling, Clear Lake, IA; along with numerous extended family, fellow VFW members, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter Gail Louise, son Dave, and siblings Thelma, Lester, Bernice, Harry, and Richard.
Deepest sympathy to Aunt Loretta and all of the children/grands/great grands.
Uncle Lew was one of a kind, one of the good guys. He will be missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him.

Sorry for your loss Jim. You’re in our thoughts!
Loretta and Family
I’m so sorry for your loss. Daryl was a joy to be around. Dennis admired him as a great VFW Commander and considered him a mentor as he went through the chairs. I especially enjoyed working with both of you on the Voice of Democracy program and always looked forward to visiting with you.
Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend Daryl’s service on Monday as I am recuperating from rotator cuff surgery and cannot do that much driving. My thoughts and prayers will be with you.

Loretta and Family:
I’m so sorry for your loss of Daryl. He was always so good the Cheryl and I at VFW functions and accepted us as comrades when others didn’t. He gave me my first appointment in the VFW and I was so honored to be apart of his year as State Commander. He encouraged Cheryl also to become the first Female State Commander. I know you kids must all be wonderful because Lorretta and Daryl were the best as Friends,
Mentors and supporting VFW programs with their kindness, generosity and caring ways. You have my deepest sympathy. I was planning on attending his funeral but I’m on four different medications, a bug really got me. May God Bless you and keep you in this difficult time. RIP Comrade Daryl.
We are very sorry for the loss of your father, and our thoughts are with you and your family.
