Service: His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at Canton United Methodist Church, with burial at Forest Hill Cemetery near Canton.
Chancy “Chany” Kumlien, age 75, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Canton Good Samaritan Society. His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at Canton United Methodist Church, with burial at Forest Hill Cemetery near Canton. Visitation will be Friday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Chany was born August 7, 1935 at Newton Hills near Canton, SD, the son of Charlie and Clara (Stangeland) Kumlien. He attended schools in South Dakota and Iowa. At age 15, he worked on farms as a hired man. He worked for Joe Ytterness, who helped Chany get started farming on his own.
Chany was united in marriage to Wanda Short February 16, 1957 in Canton. They lived on farms south of Canton and near Beloit, before moving to their farm north of Canton, where they farmed and milked cows for 40 years. They moved to Canton in 2001. His wife, Wanda, died in 2005. Chany loved visiting with family and friends. He enjoyed driving his mules and giving rides at the apple orchard.
Those grateful for having shared his life are: his son, Al (Marsha) Kumlien, Canton; five grandchildren- Amanda Kumlien (Dominic Gemelli), Craig Kumlien, Christina Sharon (Brad Thompson), Joseph Kumlien, and Katee Kumlien; six great-grandchildren- Austin Kumlien, Alexus Dethleusay, Adam McManus, ToriLea Sharon, Hailey Thompson, and Angela Scott; sister- Shirley (Jim) Kredit, Tempe, AZ; brothers, Rodger (Joan) Minor, Beloit, IA and Winnie Kumlien, Sioux Falls, SD; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife (Wanda); daughter (Susan); granddaughters- Randi Sue, Becky, and Heather; daughter-in-law (Deanna); and brothers- Ronnie and Robert.
